Furries and drawing backgrounds

What's up with it man? Whenever I try to draw something, I always want to add something to that vast nothingness behind
the character. But when I look at a lot of furry art, it's filled with abstract shapes, filler Photoshop brushes, and not really
what I would constitute a scene. For some it works out in their favor, for others it ends up looking like a cheap ploy to bat
off that pesky extra work. I'm not saying you NEED a background but, I've certainly seen a lot of pictures that would have
benefited from one.
Anyone else notice this?

Oh well. At least you put forth effort to actually draw. sometimes. Hopefully.
but i think that for furry as a whole it's also partly because furry is built largely on the characters more than scenes or stories.
plus holy crap bodies are easier to construct than places :|
which leads us back to lazy again.
i think we'll just stick with lazy.
But damn this laziness! It plagues all the members of this ship.

But a lot of the time the function of the art is simply to depict the character. For some a fursona is an inner identity, maybe even what some consider their true inner self, and the only way to express such a nonhuman fantasy identity is via art -- two-dimensional or three-dimensional (I'd call fursuits art). I suppose a self-image brought to life might seem more lifelike if it existed in a scene with a background, but mostly it's a matter of seeing the character as opposed to only imagining it.
Anyway, just some rambling on in a delayed response. :)
I guess my issue is that I'm taking a ginormous amount of art classes and an even bigger workload of drawing the most completed and well rounded scenes I
possibly can. So.. I usually end up looking at people and go "awww, there's nothing to look at".
Also, shame on me for not re-watching you. D:
