Character Designing and Underused Species
13 years ago
Hello everyone, not sure how many of you actually read these but.. hey I've had some things on my mind and was wondering if I could get some potential feedback.
First off, I've been thinking about redesigning my dragon fursona Renlu. He's looked almost exactly the same since I was 18, I'm 23 now and I'd like to make him look older, more grown up and defined as a dragon as well as add new patterns to his red hide. And yet I cant quite wrap my mind around a new concept design for him, adding horns, patterns, body features, changing his body type, all of that is quite difficult to try to picture in my head. I cant draw very well, so I cant sit down with my sketchbook and really try out various things on paper because I dont know how to draw them, and Ive always been a really indecisive person as well as letting others influence me some.
So my question to you all is this, whenever you've wanted to redesign your fursona or create a new OC; how do you plan that? How do you try things out, and settle on a new look that you're happy with? Do you copy other peoples looks a little bit? Or design something from scratch?

And the second quick topic is, do you ever feel there are species in the fur community that no one seems to be and take a fursona of? As an example I very rarely seen avians and dinosaurs but many canines and farm animals, why do you think that is? Or is it just perhaps no one finds themselves relating to these various species, or just make alternate characters to fill in those gaps.
Thank you for reading :)

I think it's possible that the majority of furries enter the fandom from an interest in someone else, and if most like canines, more canines there will be. If there was 1 avian per 20 mammals, you could probably find them easier than 100 in 2000.
To be honest, what I want to be is brutally influenced by those around me. That's why I don't bother with characters, I'd just want to be something else later. But your own character can always be a little malleable, I think.
To the OC part, I think you shouldn't worry about drawing poorly. Pencils have erasers, and if you can't make something look right, just think about why and try again. I think it's best if you sketch your own ideas. Even if it doesn't look perfect. You don't have to sketch the whole thing every time, either...
Do you disagree with anything? Disagreements can be good pathways for insight sometimes, so please don't hold back
