I think I'm more the type who would go up to the tourist maps in shops, wait till no-one was looking and write stuff like "X <- Buried Treasure", and "Here be Dragons!" on random places on the maps.

I was thinking more along the lines of that being how the mushrooms spread their young. Like maybe the shrooms spores infect the males and cause their bits to grow. They then infect a female who gets impregnated and is compelled to go lay the new spores in a field somewhere.
Something like that.
