I mean if you mix india ink with water you can do ink washes using a sumi brush and make images that way by layering different values.

literally every time I use a marker of some sort I get these really gross patchy areas of varying value and I'm looking at everyone else and they're over here blending and shading and shit and it's like

Hatching, various pressure, and medium. Markers are of course going to give you varied values, india ink will get you a more consistent black, if you scan the image, play with the levels until it looks right or just go over it digitally.

except obviously not because literally no matter what i do markers hate the fuck out of me
i don't think you really understand what i'm saying it's not that i don't get why markers give me varied values its that it's legitimately impossible to control that value
