The annual BBQ fund raiser the New Jersey Furs hold for a local EMT building, that a few furs work at, was hit by scandal when two furs in fursuits decided to engage in public sexual acts in front of children and other BBQ goers. The organizers had no idea it was happening until after the fact. At this point the consideration is that the BBQ fundraiser, a major event for New York and New Jersey furs that tends to raised a reasonably large sum, is now unlikely to happen again and there was political fall out.
The two people in question who engaged in these acts are currently unknown to the fandom but they were arrested and will likely have public indecency charges brought against them. Further there is the possibility the EMT people might lose funding and the people who are furry who work for the EMT department are worried they will face public sanction for being in anyway connected to the lewd act.
In other words two morons who couldn't keep it in their pants ruined it for everyone else. A donation drive is bein taken up to support the EMT people.
This was not AT the BBQ. It was in front of the building, while the BBQ was in the back, which is why nobody seems to be sure who was involved.
They HAVE lost funding; their annual budget was slashed by 55K, and two new ambulances previously promised them (worth about 225K) are now revoked. So while it's understandable that the public is a little dismayed, they seem to be shooting themselves in the foot since you'd think medical services are kind of a GOOD thing.
This is why the donation drives are going on.
Ah my apologies I was under the, clearly mistaken, impression that the loss of the ambulances and the funding had not been decided yet and that a hearing by the city council would be called. Said hearing could end up with those losses to the EMTs but that it was not a foregone conclusion.
Guess I must've seen a post-hearing thread? They mentioned the possibility of losing jobs but that hadn't been decided yet at least.
Well, people are doing letter-writing. Hopefully they can change their minds :-/
AFAIK it's still under investigation. One of the original organizers of the event has pulled his entry at the request of his superiors for legal reasons. So I think at the moment they're preferring to keep it as low-key as possible.
And quite frankly everyone in the fandom WANTS to keep this out of the public eye, the last thing needed is bad publicity.
Not to mention there is the very real possibility that ANY furry event in New Jersey could be affected if not cancelled outright because of this. (I just hope to GOD someone didn't catch the act on phone cam and decided to upload it somewhere...should that happen, we're all screwed.)
NJ is the most densely populated state in the country the risk is there that it could spiral to that level but the sheer density of population could act as a buffer.
So I clicked on this journal at random, expecting to see some form of humorous ranting from you, Shep, but...
I feel like I wanna cry. If there's one thing on this earth that upsets me more than anything else, it is when children see things that could mess them up. I really hope no little kid saw that.
My brain isn't being fully coherent right now, so if sentences appear broken or oddly formed, that's why.
I...wow. I'm sort of ... really really pissed / dumbfounded and sad, but I don't know what to direct the emotion at. Ugh...
I may have been wrong about them losing the funding (different source). This guy I actually know semi-personally as one of the organizers, and his summary is less detailed than the one that got deleted. http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/3576107/
So said councilman is holding the photo evidence over their heads in exchange for the funding and ambulances.
Thus, at this time, NOBODY WHO WAS AT THE EVENT has seen these photos. (this is confirmed by one of the other organizers). And supposedly, they may not be able to, though some furries are citing legal possibilities to get them.
Kinda...fishy, no?

Ideally yes no cameras or photos...
