I don't think it can be fixed honestly. Like you say humanity doesn't want it fixed....and for many reasons. Biggest one....we're a messed up bunch...to put it mildly.

Are you a Trekkie? There is a lovely parallel with the Borg... as a collective whole, for good or bad, there was nothing they could not accomplish. But those "freed from the collective" (ST:TNG mostly), they could barely feed themselves, steer their ship, fought amongst themselves and started acting as... well.... humans!

They certainly can be. And so many are......breathtakingly beautiful and wonderful people abound. But as you say, mostly on a singular basis. When we group together something rotton starts to happen, for some reason.

we should help settle these wars and conflicts. Put folks in power that we or any nation can control. So I guess my reaction is stop enabling this shit, let these folks die off so the rest of the country can reach some kind of stability.

I actually have to agree with you about helping some of these people, sad as that makes me. Often the aid is misappropriated by the people in power, and when it does reach the people it is only enough to barely sustain life....or maybe not even. But mostly I agree because I think we have plenty of needy people and causes right here at home that foreign aid money could be used for. I believe in helping your own first. I think that could apply no matter WHERE you live if your government is routinely sending massive aid out of the country. (And that might get ME attacked by some....but as you say...so?)

As to helping settle others' wars and such, there may be some where we need to to ensure our own safety, but others we should mind our own business and not try to dictate how they think and rule themselves. That's a hard decision to make without all the facts, and unless you are in government I don't believe anyone is getting even most of them. Maybe not even the leaders of countries do....I just don't know. The news is so full of lies and stories spun to show an individual view these days that I'm not sure it's possible for anyone to know what's right or wrong in most cases.

Oh, and the point of my posting this was just......Ya know, I'm not even really sure. The sadness of it just affected me a lot and I felt compelled to share. I actually got up this morning meaning to delete it, but decided to answer the comments first at least. I may or may not delete it still.

It's simple biology and simple behavioural science: where's high mortality, there's high birth rate; where are plenty desperate people, lots of them will attempt to escape and search for a better place to live. And this equates to more desperate refugees with absolutely no education, skills or even desire to integrate at your doorstep.

The ugly truth is that, when you approach the problem from a purely economical point of view, it is often more cost-effective to sponsor a failing country than to deal with refugees on your own territory.

The problem lies not in "increased productivity" that retaining that money might yield; it lies in the money spent in "protecting the border"; freedoms lost to "strenghtening the police powers to deal with illegal immigrant crime" and "building up the private prison system".

In short, you use some money that would marginally improve your life to make sure *they* won't be as interested to come in and crash your comfy life. And, hopefully, get their own "first world" economy down the road, civilise and educate enough to go into the negative birth rate.

But then, of course, this would mean less helpless immigrants and kicking a helpless immigrant around for a bit now and then sure feels good, doesn't it?

I've said nothing about strengthening the police system, protecting the border, and immigrant crime. All of which are factors but tiny ones in comparison to this.

In fact I never said I didn't want immigration, I don't care about emmi- or immigration. I actually want to improve these countries that we're sending aid to and the best way to do it in my opinion is to stop giving handouts.

Let these things settle out on their own. as they should be doing, as they do, do whenever the first world leaves the third to it's own business.

And please don't say I kick around immigrants, or am a hard core republitard. as I gather from the 'issues' you say I care about. the democrats and the republicans screw us over equally, and it all comes from the same source. Congress.

Thats the solace I take in this, humanity=sucks but people=potential for greatness and good. And sorry I can't watch stuff like that, it's sad as hell but I'm not in a position to help in any of them right now, the best I can do is offer my prayers, which I do.

You're totally right. And I don't blame you for not watching. It's ugly and there are even worse things. Prayer is one of the best kinds of help anyone can offer, I believe.
