After you submit the file you want to use, you still have to set it as your avatar i think. I think there's a drop down list in the change avatar section, or a grid of previously uploaded files that you can select from.

It doesn't show up, the picture never shows up in the grid area

try resetting the browser, and if that doesn't work, i think there was something in the help section about not being able to upload avatars.
