I absolutely love that speech.

I'm having trouble with Flash lately, but I remember this speech. It's one of Chaplin's most inspire performances, utterly brilliant. But I can't help wondering if this isn't what inspired "The Great Dictator" from the start. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PrBn1HmJG4

The similarities between 'the Tramp' and Hitler was a common gag through the 30s and was in part one of the reasons he made the film.

Somehow that just figures. He could have distanced himself from old Adolph, but it was easier and more telling to go with it. And the result is that speech! Plus a scene of him shaving a customer to the tune of Brahms' Hungarian Dance No. 5 that's utterly brilliant in its comedic timing!

American, Cambodian, Rwandan, Turk, Korean, Canadian, Spaniard, Russian, Pole, Dutch, Irish, Indian, Kenyan.... ALL the peoples of the world should hear this, subtitled in their own language, not dubbed... to HEAR the passion, the pleading, the heartfelt desire for everyone, EVERYONE, to understand what it means to be, truly, brothers around this ever-shrinking world of ours.

This and Carl Sagan's Pale Blue Dot define for me what is best to be human.

Seen it, and love that speech. That's a speech that every national leader in the world should review at least annually. Heck, it's a speech that every living person in the world should see at least annually. It's about peace, love, acceptance, tolerance...all the good things that humanity is supposed to be known for. Even if Mr. Chaplin didn't write that speech, his delivery of it was absolutely perfect.

With all their peace, love, tolerance, acceptance, friendship, and reverence for the human creative spirit, I've found furries to be the community that most closely fits that ideal.

Looking up I see StephenRane mentioned Carl Sagan. There is a line Dr. Sagan said in "Cosmos" that is one of the most haunting and eye-opening things ever to be said: "The stars call to us, if we do not destroy ourselves."
