In California and etcx. I don't even THINK about setting off ffireworks, but the shows at our parks nearby were amazing!! Best I've ever seen and I'm not a kid either!!

Or Colorado for that matter... I had the pleasure of helping my dad move and let me tell ya... smoke as far as the eye could see. All of Colorado basically smells like a camp fire :/

Oman...I'm not at all surprised. I was planning on coming to Colorado to camp and fish this summer before coming to see Foxene at RMFC...now I'm just hoping to be able to get to the Denver area for the con without too much trouble.

yeah. its been pretty dry here but i cant even imagine colorado. im in indiana and its prob the worst i can remember.

And I'm in Cali, where fires are pretty endemic too. It's always dry as a popcorn fart here. We've been super lucky around my area for several years and are just keeping our fingers crossed all the time. I feel so sorry for the poor people in Colorado, New Mexico and ANYWHERE those terrible fires strike!

yeah. it can get dry here but the only thing we have that can burn is very very big fields of corn. which are the only things not dry since the farmers use all the water to water them

I never heard of that happening. Thank god! Sure I've heard the old tale of kids putting firecrackers up a cats bottom....but I hope that's just a folk story, or whatever you call it. But not any specific cases of someone doing it for real! That's just.... Anyone like that needs to have exactly the same thing done to them. Let them see how they like it!

Im sorry to have to say this but in tha years before they started banning Fireworks there where many cases of that exact thing ... I think it was about 20+ cases in tha final year on tha news >.<

I kinda figured that out myself. I would like to meet some of the people I've met online myself, though...oddly enough they almost always seem to be younger than I am.

Younger than 20? Most I know are older than that by a bit. Though I realize the demographic here is heavily towards very young people, I wouldn't expect most of them to be that young.

Yep. Though I have met a few in their late 20's it hasn't been that often.

I seem to make friends with the younger people a lot easier for some reason. Maybe it's cause they're crazier than I am which makes me feel sane.

Hmmm...and though I meet people much younger than I, most of them are mid 20s to 30s, who I like cause they seem so much saner that many. Also a little more grounded in reality. IRL that is. I don't mind lots of craziness here! ;3

I suppose it takes all sorts of people to make up this world.

But yeah, I don't like reality all that much. Another reason I've immersed myself in mythology and fictional writing of...MOST kinds. XD

I don't know why but mythology and swords/sorcery stuff leaves me flat. But I get lost in Sci-fi. Particularly space stories. Though I do love my time travel, aliens on earth, psionic power and all the other forms it can take.

My first real story involved Sci-Fi. It was set way in the future, and the earth was no longer inhabitable, the surface anyways. Underground is a different matter. From the underground dwellers, a select few that managed to pass rigorous tests were sent up to a space station called New Hope to be further trained and later placed on teams that were sent out to find habitable planets.

Way back then, I was using first person present tense. Been meaning to remake it with third person past tense.

Guy in my hometown just about literally blew his head off a few years ago.

I once gave a friend some black powder to make fireworks with. He said he knew what he was doing and I believed him. He lost his thumb lighting off one of the resulting creations. Turned out he didn't know that black powder is an explosive rather than controlled rate burning. I cannot tell you how sorry and embarrassed I was that I didn't question him further to determine his knowledge of these things beforehand. So I definitely know what you're talking about here....

Well, in this case, he was firing a three-inch mortar (which is so many kinds of illegal in this state) and the fuse was delayed, apparently. Stuck his head over the tube, and then it really went off, killing him instantly. Black powder does have something of a controlled burn rate, but only when it's not confined, and even then, it's rather quick.

Bad shit!! He really fucked up! Anyone doing that kind of stuff should know better. Hang fires are not that uncommon, especially with fuses!

I once put a charge of black powder in my gun, then decided not to shoot it before I'd added the ball and patch, so I just dumped the powder out on the ground to light it there for the fizzle and smoke. I unthinkingly lit it with my bic lighter and lost my eyebrows and a bit of hair. I hadn't realized before that how fast it burns as I'd Done that gunpowder and just watched it burn merrily away. This just went FOOSH!

Yeah, it's technically a low explosive, as opposed to high explosives like TNT, hexogen, Composition B, and so forth. There are even slower explosives, like brown powder, a courser sort of smokeless powder used for artillery.

And what's this about muzzle-loaders?

When I lived in Utah I was into black powder shooting. Target and I even hunted deer with my 50 cal. Hawken once. I sewed myself a set of mountain man leathers out of deer and elk hides I bought in Salt Lake City at a tanners. (still have them too....though they're awful big on me. Last year, I was watching the fireworks from a hill overlooking the Las Vegas area. There were fireworks as far as the eye could see. It was so cool.

I'm in a similar spot. On a hill overlooking three different displays from three different cities on the horizon last night from my grandparents porch. It's been pretty dry around here so there weren't many private sky born explosions going on like is usual.

It's illegal to set off private ones here, though you can buy some, which I have never understood. Strange laws here in California. But the parks have so much better ones anyway and the parks are in flat areas so people can at least see something of them even if they don't go there.
