the AKC home page has links to all of its breed clubs which can help put you in touch with breeders in your area. I work in the dog industry and please please please understand that ordering a dog to be shipped to you should not under any circumstances be done without lots of proper research. The best deal is not usually the best deal. I have met one (and a friend met another) person who ordered a puppy that they got a pic of and everything and a different dog got shipped. In one case the breeder denied it (despite the pic being very obviously a different dog) and the other they were willing to fix it but the family had fallen in love with the dog they got, which just allows such mistakes to keep being made. Also check lots of references, I also knew a dog that the people had convinced themselves was a giant schnauzer that was worth their $800 plus shipping that they paid, but the dog looked like a scraggly haired labradoodle on the small side at best, there was no way to make the dog look like a giant schnauzer no matter what I did, this may not have happened if they had researched better. Even with local breeders, go check them, talk to them before puppies, during raising and they should be up front and able and willing to let you visit. They should not be encouraging you to take puppies before 8 weeks, 10 is even better. The facility should not assault your nose, and if there are 5 generations of dogs around there may be some undocumented inbreeding going on.
I am not trying to be a downer, but I see 30 dogs personally a week, often more, and bad breeding is rampant. A bad breeder for a malamute can equal a dramatically shortened life (which is short anyway) and most commonly ends up causing a lot of joint distress in older age, displaysia and lameness which is no fun for anyone.

Echoing what Emberli said - please go to a responsible breeder (not that I think you wouldn't, but it seems to bear repeating for anyone stumbling onto this info). You're not starting early - with a good breeder and a couple litters a year, you may be waiting a bit, but it's good to start poking around.

See if any of those breeders are reasonably local and start there. Also check into rescues if you don't necessarily want to start with another puppy - there are LOADS of dogs who need a good home.

not sure which area of hte country you are in, but what I did was my friend found our cairn pups on puppyfind.com then we researched the breeders from there to find ones that specialized only in the breed and had good praactices blahblah :) honestly she interviewed us more than I would have expected, we drove 18 hours to visit the puppies for the first time and do the inperson interview (afte rpassing a phone interview) So I'd say check puppyfind for listings and then reserach them out after that. Also I'll talk to  soulfire he had several huskies in the past from a reputable breeder I'll see if I can get the name :)

It was hard to do but i'm glad I did work on it after I lost my 19 yr old cocker spaniel last fall, it was months before I was able to get the puppy but, it gave me something happy to look to. Being home alone all day before the hubby comes home really made things quiet and depressing without him :(
