Coloring- 95% of how well-recieved one is
13 years ago
Anyone ever notice how the 'popular' artists are the ones with fantastic coloring, but not always very good technical skill when it comes to things like anatomy, perspective, etc.?
I'm not really hatin', nor do I have anyone in particular in mind. This seems like a REALLY common problem. Like, they can make an object look 3D like a MOTHERFUCKER, but then you're just like "WOAH that is not how that works/arms are different lengths/that bookshelf looks like it's in a different kind of space".
Or they can only draw one sort of thing. Maybe even only one species. And they all have very similar/the same face(s)?
Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of artists, even some popular ones, who are perfectly well-rounded and are good at both technical stuff and coloring(which I think is more forgiving and fluid).
And then there are people like me who do have at least a bit of a grasp on anatomy and perspective(though I really need to work on perspective/foreshortening myself), and can't color. :I
I'm confident in my bodies, but not in filling them in. At my BEST, I have slightly above average coloring, but most of the time, it's mediocre or rather below average. No matter how many things I try in real life, no matter how many tutorials I look at with concepts of reflective light, how to do this or that, no matter how much I'm practicing, coloring and shading is still really kicking my ass and killing any urge for me to do anything further than a sketch.
Does anyone have any good tutorials/reading material/advice when it comes to coloring and lighting? I feel like I'm stalling and that my lines aren't what I need to focus on right now.

I like the way you color things. It's not the norm, it reminds me very much of Film Noir in many cases. It's dark, it's kinda gritty and sometimes the 'bright' is a little overly bright, but in my eyes it works for the type of pictures you do. Don't get too discouraged, you're a good artist and you've come a hell of a long way since I met you
"OH MY GOD, IT IS SO GAWJUSS"
And when you're like "You could defs benefit from a bit of model or photography study", it's "SHUT UP IT'S MY STYLE" and then rabid fans attack you like you aren't making a completely valid point.
I don't think my coloring will change so much in 'style', but I would like it to be more believable, stand out a bit more, make more sense. I have high contrast on the brain though, and will probably never stop making REALLY dark darks, and REALLY light lights.
best advice for coloring is seriously just to paint from observation and don't paint from what colors you "think" an object is, but what colors it "actually" is (not all shadows are gray, flesh tone has blues and purples in it, etc)
this tutorial has been around forever, but it's still really good: http://androidarts.com/art_tut.htm
At least, I certainly think so. And it isn't REALLY about popularity, more about being better at doing both XD
If I wanted to be popular, I know what to do. Giant dicks and tits(sometimes on the same body) and lots of DODGE tool
and more dodge. Not shiny enough. Or spoogey enough.
