It depends. There has to be a line that if they cross you can get mean. But being mean isn't neccessarily a bad thing, just they screwed you over and they need to fix it.

You can still be assertive but not mean.

Having too soft a touch when it comes to outstanding commissions. Three years might be pushing it a little, y'know?

Whoa, you got 3 years. I am dealing with a couple commissions that is two years in the waiting. Three years, hmm that sounds more like shoving instead of pushing. Sadly to say I can't really can't any solid advice here. All I can is consider the artist and more importantly yourself. If the person is still drawing, doing other commissions, or (in my mind the most heinous act) not communicating then maybe you should cut it off. Just try hear the person firstly. Good luck to you.

And I must say I'm sorry is taking me long to finish yours man, I'm trying to get you a really nice looking pic and even after you said it was no needed I really appreciate the way you helped me back then, so I really don't want to disappoint you and reward you with more than just salted nuts.

It's only "too nice" when it's detrimental to yourself for whatever reason. If you suffer no lash back from your kindness or your patience, then more power to you. But if you do, that's what you should evaluate.

waiting for a work that you've payed in advanced is not that nice specially if the illustrator seems to be procrastinating or even making things for others... it's your right to be kept informed about the execution of the work, most of the times politeness can work, but this is a commercial deal so you have the right for the "thing" you've purchased.

I'm not sure what to do, especially when said artists are active with other things.

Non sense, I mean if you've been waiting five years for art then yeah but that's insane. Otherwise I say you've always been a good guy, keep it up there's not enough good guys around! :)

I have been waiting on a couple things, one passing 2 years and the other more than 3, but I'm not sure how lenient is too lenient.

I would say three years is time to start inquiring about progress for sure. It is hard to know because some artists take time, and the art is a hobby so it is difficult. I would say anything more than a year or two without any updates might be time to ring in.

But... it's nice to be nice.
