I don't like the practice because in my eyes it's pretty close to being a scam. You're selling something that can't even be considered as yours (copyright doesn't work here). Or so my limited legal knowledge says.

Legal stuff aside, it just doesn't feel like proper artwork (and now I'm referring to those template recolors which are popping up everywhere). Just a quick and cheap way to make money.

I understand you. But aside the legal stuff, the fandom usually have it own way to do it: some artists have a large fanbase, who protect them and their artwork. I'm not saying that I have such fanbase, though, but some of my drawings have been copyied already, and people came to me showing that and going against those who did the art thief.

I'm prompting myself to put only unique creatures to sell - but only if people want it.

But what if a relatively unknown random person buys it. The fanbase will probably forget about adoptable designs pretty fast. So when someone "steals" a design from that person, no one will notice. But that's the way it is I suppose.

Simply put, make them look like art and people will see the difference.

Mostly the "no templates" thing. Make every picture unique. Not just in the creature it depicts, but also in other things, like the pose and theme.

Personally, I think it's a load of pointless twaddle and anyone that buys one is a stupid bumface. I don't really have anything against the artists that do it though; if people are willing to slather you in money for minimal effort, then good for you. Though when people just sell the same thing with 20 minor variations in colour, that does irk me somewhat. I'd be ashamed to do something like that.

That last example wasn't a recolor. I was playing with the colors to see wich one would go better with that creature =)

I personally find unique and well drawn ones ok and kind of neat. I personally dont buy them because i create my own characters etc but i think if done well and at a good quality level its just fine

I find the ones that are uniquely drawn are more acceptable socially, the ones that are just recolors... well those are where the real controversy lies. However, since you're technically selling the right to use a specific character, unless the species used for the artwork is in and of itself a unique creation of the artist, i don't see that just recolors are really all that appropriate to sell, since a fox is a fox is a fox. However, if the person who created a species, say the Sergel, were to want to sell the right to use a character made from their species, and make that the only way anyone had permission to use their species, then that would be reasonable to a degree since the species itself is a piece of intellectual property O.o

I find i enjoy how shizuworks does their adoptable since all they use that is " the same" is the basic body shape, and all the hair and tails and body parts are usually unique to the character for sale. However this still triggers some people's annoyance since they think that it's still just a recolor... :: shrug ::

I lo9ve Adoptables.
Its good creative practice for the artist, and sometimes sonething fun for someone to look at. Heck, it can sometimes be kept or given/sold to someone else who may like it enough.
I really like them.
Original Designs Only though.

Its annoying to see little Grey Foxes or Black Wolves.
Even MORE annoying then that, are just quick simple Wolf, Fox, Huskie, and Simp0le Dragon Designs. I might let it slip if either of the four have a nice and creative design. But Im more drawn to Other Species. They are less seen, and often look and feel more unique and desirable.

And while I like adoptables, heck I may even buy them. I really don't like it when they are Auctioned, and are being sold for more then $10-$20; depending on Design and if Handdrawn, or just recolored Templates.

It looks and feels like a cheap way to make some extra money.
I think if they are gonna be sold at high prices, something should come with it. Like an Additional Art Peice of the Character.

But I really try to make them unique.

And I agree. When in auction, if the price goes higher than X, it's nice to make something else for the buyer :3

oooh, Furry Flam is amazing! I think that one would do really well as an adoptable. I especially like the striped one. I also like the fox-dragon hybrid.

About adoptables, uuuhm.. Yeah. I don't know, really.
I see ppl being successful with selling them, but actually I would not do it. I'd rather work on character designs on commission/request. :) I also do not buy them.

I've never really liked them. Especially the template kinds that is the same pose with colors changed around. Sometimes it makes me think of someone who got high one day and decided to play with colors and with 20 different kinds, decides to sell them, because they didn't know what to do with 20 of the same fox.

I've never adopted any, and the only way I can see myself to adopt them, would if one matched closer to my character in markings and species and it was a good representation to use as a character sheet of sorts.

If you did adoptables the way your examples show, just add a little color (or not) and you could sell them as-is. They are like mini character sheets. Not the same pose in every single one of them and have to share that same template with 19 others.

That's my little opinion.

adoptables are very strange to me. Not anything more or less than very strange. Recolors are really weird. o.o; I don't dislike them, but it's like... pre-made imaginings.

Eu acho que o seu fursona é a sua representação psicológica de si ou do que você queria ser, sempre tem um motivo, então não faz sentido comprar um personagem, pelo simples fato de que você não pode comprar um corpo para você mesmo...
e me surpreendo de verdade em saber que existem pessoas que ganham dinheiro só por vender uma ideia não física que qualquer criança de 10 anos consiga fazer facilmente...

Sim, Lupe. Mas fursona =/= personagem. E o que essas pessoas geralmente fazem é criar personagens, não comprar um fursona pra si mesmo.
E sobre "qualquer criança de 10 anos"... Não vou nem comentar o absurdo da sua frase.

Em relação de criar um personagem totalmente diferente usando criatividade, acredito que qualquer criança sim, a parte difícil é manter as coisas realistas, mais pegar um animal e transformar em algo totalmente magico e diferente? já vi mutias fazendo!

Boa sorte tentando retratar tal personagem no papel ou em arte digital, independente do estilo da arte. Uma criança de 10 anos dificilmente chegaria próximo do que o Flam faz por exemplo (ou que qualquer artista faz)
A menos que a criança em questão seja um gêno savant.

E além disso, tem o tempo e esforço gasto pelo artista pra criar o personagem, retratá-lo e desenhá-lo. Desenhos não sem de uma impressora no seu ouvido, leva muito tempo, esforço e dedicação pra poder desenhar algo decente. Mais tempo ainda pra colorir.

Não é simplesmente "imaginar" algo, mas retratá-lo da maneira correta e transmitir a idéia que você queria passar sobre o personagem de forma eficaz. Senão o desenho se torna um simples rabisco.

De qualquer forma, um personagem Adoptable é basicamente um design de personagem e cores criado por um artista e cujos direitos de uso são "adotados" por um terceiro pra fazer o que bem entender com ele.

Não sou artista, mas entendo o lado deles.

Mais se entrarmos no assunto da arte do personagem, depende de quem faz e não do o que é em si.

É fácil imaginar um personagem, e muitos podem pedir ou comprar desenhos... por isso digo, nunca entrei no assunto de dom e talento, e sim do fato de que pegar um lobo, pintar de roxo, colocar assas/chifres/cauda de fogo, é algo que até uma criança de 10 anos faz

Fato que qualquer um pode ser criativo com algo genérico, mas não é o caso aqui.
Como o próprio Flam disse: Seriam designs originais, idéias dele e não um lobo genérico com uma cor estranha e acessórios.

De qualquer forma, já vi algumas criaturas que ele inventou, e na boa, não é algo tão simples quanto por pelos em um dragão ou asas num cachorro.
Ele pensa na anatomia da criatura, em como o ambiente, a forma da criatura, como ela sobrevive no ambiente e o que ela é nesse ambiente (predador de topo ou presa-base?) influenciam na sua anatomia, cor, forma, etc... Sim, tem momentos que ele simplesmente adiciona pelos num bicho, mas isso é for the lulz, como ele próprio diz.

De qualquer forma, vejo muito artista criando criaturas originais e próprias mas que não levam quase nada em consideração (algumas vezes, nem mesmo anatomia).

Ser criativo é uma coisa. Basear sua criatividade em algo prático ou em exemplos da vida real e partir daquilo pra algo fantasioso, além de fazer esse algo fantasioso parecer plausível está BEM LONGE da capacidade de uma criança de 10 anos.
Se fosse assim, qualquer criança de 10 anos poderia criar o que Tolkien criou.
