I have played the last two beta weekends, and I can offer you some advice
1. Guardians, while awesome, are flimsier than they look.
2. Learn to dodge.
3. LEARN TO DODGE.
4. Don't be shy about using your attacks and skills.
5. DODGING, LEARN IT.
It's such an outlandish concept then what you normally see in MMOs where you jsut sit still and spam attacks.
I'm going to either play a ranger ( i love ranged characters ) or some dual-wielding fines fighter with swords... I think the thief comes the closest to that ( I don't like characters that use heavy armor ).
I'm kind of pissed that the ranger can't dualwield swords... oh well.
You'll want to use all sorts of weapon combinations. They're all fun and useful in their own way. I love how a thief with a pistol and a knife is a master of playing keep away from his enemies. Normal dodging isn't the only way to keep enemies at a distance, after all.
True but I just like the character archetypes. THe sniper and the lightly armoured sword dualwielding killing machine. I was hoping a ranger could fill both roles but sadly he can't. SO, will just have to see how the thief preforms with leather armour and dual swords. ( I will of coruse experiment with all the weapons... but I'm going to grravitate towards thsoe 2 options to the end anyways. )
Oh I like the idea that you can buy premium stuff if you jsut grinde enough in the game. I love that concept obviously because I'm not big on spending cash for ingame stuff. ANd TBH, it feels like you've earned it if you grinde for it.
A list probably much longer than you were expecting, so take your pick:
* It's a little too standard MMORPG-ish for me. I really loved the mission-based system of the original Guild Wars. By this point, most everyone in GW1 is likely pretty tired of PvE and Heroes kind of broke things, but back in the old days, you really felt like some kind of medieval commando squad going into enemy territory on a high-risk mission.
* The ordinary heart-quests and dynamic events don't really have that same epic feel to them, and it's hard to see how that could improve down the line. Even the more interesting dynamic events, like escorting someone to set a bomb in a monster-filled cave, feels a little too scripted and wooden. Oh, hey, yet another swarm of 30 centaurs to be annihilated by our 20 players -- didn't see that coming. Personal story is kind of neat, but is meant to be tackled alone -- I'd play a single-player RPG if I wanted that. Dungeons sound neat, but they're a minor aspect of the game -- I'm not buying just for Dungeons.
* It's sad to see the dual-class system go. They cited that it was difficult to balance, but it was a major draw of Guild Wars. There was a limitless number of combinations you could do. I fondly remember an interesting Ranger/Necromancer build that used a staff and almost exclusively necromancy touch spells, and a Ranger/Warrior I designed, that fought with a sword and shield. Yes, they'll add more skills over time, for sure, but the GW2 customization is very restrictive. You should at the least be able to change your weapon skills per weapon. Some of the weapon skills are really terrible, or might not fit your build idea, yet you're stuck with it.
* I'm not a fan of the PvP capture-and-hold gametype that everyone (e.g. The Old Republic) seems to be stealing from World of Warcraft nowadays, and the maps seem better built for more of a 5v5 or 6v6, not an 8v8. Okay, maybe there will be other game types or servers with reduced player count, but I haven't seen that yet. I'd rather have the old 4v4 deathmatches. And the free-join system just invites trouble as usefulness of classes grows or weakens based on the total number of players, or people join but don't contribute, which is unfair for players who aren't into hardcore tournament play.
* WvW is a complete wreck. The game was not designed to have huge armies of characters clash against each other. This is not a Battlefield game, where vehicles and positioning and long-range shooting and complex environments come into play. This is not Planetside, where there's a 15-minute timer on base capture and a base-connection system that creates natural frontlines, giving the defenders a chance to organize and defend. Yes, I understand that over time, servers will be reorganized based on performance in an effort to get equal ability. But a good WvW battle will always be the exception rather than the norm in its current state.
That about covers the big stuff. Maybe some of it will improve over time, or be better at high levels. But I just can't risk it.
I never played the original guild wars.... haven't even heard of it till GW2 was announced.
THe dynamic events feel a lot better then what I'm used to from WoW... they actually remind me of the dynamic events in Warhammer online witch I loved.
The dual class system sounded quite interesting... sad to hear that's not a part of the game. But sicne i never saw it in the original I won't miss it.
I'm not a fan of PvP in general. witch is why I'm glad PVP is restricted to special areas and you can choose not to do PVP at all.
Thanks for the whole info. Actually i didnt play GW yet (any), i just wanted to know because a friend of mine maybe wants to test it. Im a WoW player ^^
And what is WvW?
No, it's still in Beta. But if you preordered it you can play it B4 launch during the beta during special Beta events, the last of witch is comming up this weekend ( if you preordered the game ).
it did away with many of the things that irked me about WoW, like gankers, ninjas, killstealers, endless mob farming and pesky party invites to do quests... AND most of ALL, the fact that unlike WoW, GW2 has no monthly subscription fee... so it's a one time purchase for the entire game.
And also unlike most other Free MMO's even do presumably free those who have nothing to do with money will efford best gear and stats and so superior to those who didn't invest in the game
I don't mind if they have some overpowered gear in the auction house for people willing to spend IRL money. Asl ong as I get all the game and you don't NEED those items to survive.
Say that to PvP section or PvE demanders who want only those with gear that you can only aquire in the specific Instance/Dungeon (and ofc via buying with real money)
So many people say it's good, but I really don't care for it. I play WoW, and even though it's getting up there in age, I'd rather stick with it than move on to GW2. I've looked at the PvP and I despise it. My reasons are quite simple and I think one of the people above put them into great context. The fact that there's no factions is just upsetting for me. I love massive open world conflict and it doesn't look like it'll be able to provide.
Heh, what a coincidence... the massive open world faction vs faction conflict is the precise reason I hated WoW ( damn them Gankers !!! ). I hate PVP in general ( cause I suck at it ).
Other things that I despised about WOW: ninjas, kill stealers, group invites, sharing quests in order to do them with your other party members, endless mob grinding for XP.
Now admitedly the last time I played was in BC with the sunwell plateau update... I heard they changed a few things since then... but oh well.
Will just have to see how this one pans up.
On the other hand what i loved about WoW was the rich and enticing lore behind every area an d event in their world... it draws you in. The races in general were cool too and I did like the faction conflict in theory... until gankers wouldn't let you do your quests...
The one game that i actually LOVED the PVP in was in Warhammer online. I liked the lore in that one better, the races, the gameplay... well jsut about everything about it was preatty awesome... but I can't afford a monthly subscription for it... witch is why I couldn't play that one.
No monthly subscription is probably the reason I bought this one.
They said they wouldn't make people pay for special skills, extra powered weapons or things like that. New locations will be added via extensions I think.
I guess that's fair enough. As long as they don't happen too ofthen ( as in the base game being short and having to buy a lot of expantions to get the full game... that would also be a rip off. ) Hoping that's not the case either.
I preordered it like 2 months ago and always somehow managed to miss the beta weekends because I went to the summer house on weekends. ^^; So this weekend it will be my first try too. Definitely going with the elementalist. :D
Lol yeah I watched lots of videos even before betas and they say Elementalist is the most complicated class to play, because they can switch between 4 elements and get all kinds of skill sets. :) But that's why it's most interesting for me. xD Well once we're ingame, do tell me your username so I can put you in my friends list. :D
Can't really play this weekend even if I just bought a computer just for that game... And Eurofurence is during the game release, yeah xD
I'd suggest that you take a look at guildwars2furs even if you don't want to join the guild (you can join more than one guild btw).
If you don't know where to go then maybe consider joining the same server, this way you won't have to pay to play pvp with us or other furs in this server.

It's the same system that Puzzle Pirates uses and it works excellently, despite what anyone may claim.
god i rage so hard when people see beta tests as just sneak peaks
This will be my first contact with the game as I got it just recently. AM curious what it's gona be like.
Barring some kind of really impressive showing at the August head-start, won't be buying.

I could be wrong though.

You can't go wrong with no subscription fee!
I doubt they will though.
Elementalist is the 3rd in my list of choices but it sounds a little complicated to play... and I don't like wearing robes.
But I still don't know how the servers work... how would we even know we are on the same server anyways?
I guess we could go there oto make sure we're in the same place.
I'd suggest that you take a look at
