Brush teeth before breakfast? Why?

Why, in almost every American cartoon I've seen, do the characters always brush their teeth before eating breakfast? They even do that on Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends! Isn't brushing your teeth right before you eat breakfast redundant? Isn't the whole idea for the teeth to be protected for a period of time after you brush them? Is this an American thing?
I guess the main idea is to freshen your breath for the new day. After all, you'd probably be snacking again at 10-11 a.m., so it's not like the cleanliness of brushing after breakfast would last long. :)
