Looking for opinions on a bit of game theory:

Here's a curious topic.
Game-wise, there's no real difference between an individual and a squad/ship. When communicating, you're speaking as one person (yourself or your squad's/ship's captain). When performing tasks, you're using abilities of a single 'entity' (yourself or your squad/ship).
But what about RP-wise? Does playing the role of something larger than a single individual take something away from the experience?

...and thinking about it, I find myself unable to recall a game similar to that in controlling both a singular person -and- the overall group you're part of.
Turn-based tactical games don't count >>
The only trick is to ensure that by controlling the group you don't lose track of the individual in charge of it, and make sure they don't fade into the crowds of the nameless and faceless.
One squad in a company... doable.
One ship in a fleet... still good, especially if you name your ship.
One division in a galaxy-wide alliance.... nooow that's getting impersonal, but that's also a totally different gameset =P
Unless each player represents their own 'president' or 'high commander', but even then they wouldn't actually -see- the effects they're having on a galaxy-wide scale, despite being the one giving all the big orders and working with other players, who control their own factions. At that point, it's less an RPG and more... space Civilization. Which I do not look forward to in designing to be pen&paper-friendly.
...if I even eventually get to that point. We'll see >>
My question still stands at if that takes away from the usual feel of RPing or not
