I'd save the parakeet. Granted, I'm not a fan of birds, but Parakeets live longer than hamsters from what I've heard, so I'd save the one I'd be able to keep longest.
1) evaluate them both to see which one is most likely to become a superhero, great inventor, genius scientist, or anything similar
2) if there's nothing to be seen in step one, count the number of people who love them, and save the one that would be missed by the most number of people
3) in the case of a tie in step two, save the one that would have the longest expected lifespan after being saved
Or skip all that and save the parakeet, because hamsters are no fun.
Hamsters are solitary jerks, I'm not going to risk getting bit by one if I have to absolutely pick. If I could save them both, then maybe I would, but parakeet bites in my experience aren't as bad as any of the small rodent bites.
I'll go for the parakeet, even tho I am not a fan of birds. Mostly an economical issue for me: Parakeets live longer, cost more, take more attention, etc,.
Hamsters seem to be valued at about a buck a dozen. ^^
This is a question that can't be answered so easily. A life is a life and every one is valuable. It is not at us humans to decide which one is "more valuable".
Perhaps it would make a difference if one of these is already very old and ill or even suffering while the other one is young and healthy but if it is the question for two life forms where you have no special relations to and things like age, healthiness etc. doesn't count than - in my opinion (!) - this question can't be answered.
We humans are not able to grant/give life, so we should not decide which one to take. :3
(Sorry if my word's don't match my thoughts perfectly, my English is not the best.)
Life is ultimately the only thing that has value, and everybody or everything has the same right to quality of life, but nothing exists in isolation. If one person spends their entire life saving the lives of others, and another person spends their life sitting still, the first person's life is the more important one.
Humans do need to be able to make this judgement. The value of a life is its own value, plus the effect it has on others.
I'd probably save the parakeet, since saving the hamster means handling/interacting with it and that can induce just about enough stress for a mild heart attack. Hamsters are frail. They probably shouldn't be pets.
I dunno! My first pet was a parakeet and my second was a hamster so I have attachments to both! I'd be equally likely to choose either, so I think it'd come down to which was easier to save in the situation (ie which was easier to catch, whether I have a place to keep it, etc)
I think I'll go find a lizard instead
They're more expensive, harder to breed, and live longer.
What does a hampster live, like two years? Three tops? Parakeets can live over a decade.

Now I kinda wanna draw a hamakeet gryphon. XD
Hamsters are just.....no.
