When Sci-Fi was fun and not so obviously about money that my 7-year-old nephew is complaining, "Why can't they make a good story like your old tapes? Does it always have to be flashing lights today?"

Likewise. The old Brittanica 6 Drive-In on Bayshore Drive in Ottawa. Had a lot of good memories there. Now it's a parking lot for an over hyped and overly expensive Famous Players.

Sci-Fi on television back then was all about the money. I love looking back nostalgically at the shows of old and remembering the fond childhood memories too, but we need to be real, half those show were made solely to cash in riding on Star Wars' coattails, including Battlestar Galatica and Buck Rogers.

Even die-hard Star Wars fans were put off by the last trilogy. The modern Battlestar Galactica is a non-canonical joke. Avatar? I have never been so bored, despite it being a reasonable story.

They have totally lost the fun.

Oh it was pretty obvious, even my elementary school eyes and rose colored nostalgia glasses weren't enough for me to not notice the transparent reasoning those shows were on. Invisible Man- To cash in on the success of Six Million Dollar Man (same with Bionic Woman); Galatica, Planet of the Apes TV series, Buck Rogers? Cash in on Star Wars and the Apes movies. Not that I mind it; I love those shows and collect them loyally, but I am not going to lie to myself out of nostalgia that they were made with more noble goals in mind then any modern show today.

One thing I like about these old sci-fi space operas is than not everything is a shade of grey and badly lit ship interiors.

I think the originals are better then the so called revamped versions. That's what makes them timeless classics. Take Hook for example, no one has the balls to touch it (I know it's not exactly Sci-Fi but you get my point) Because it's perfect the way it is. And if someone DID try to remake they would be flamed HARD.

yeah, they screwed up the idea on BattleStar Galactica with it's remake , even the Star Wars Movies got ruined with the addition of those 3 movies, even the re-edits ruined the Star Wars movies.

Boy, that brings back memories...Friday evenings at my Grandma's apartment, watching Space: 1999...sneaking home from the beach during the summer to watch "Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons"... Japanese monster shows like "Ultraman" and "Johnny Sokko"...

(shrugs) Wishing for the past is seldom productive... still, enjoying the past for what it is without overlooking decent new stuff (it's out there, you just have to find it) has it's merits.

People with a desire to show the old movies to a new generation in a way they can relate to.

I'm wondering when someone will get around to re-making Darkstar. The A-Grade movies to remake and rape will run out eventualy

liking the old shows isn't living in the past, we just liked how those old shows put more into the story than just special effects. The remakes are to dependent without trying to maintain a strong story .

And that's why you look for the well-made new IP rather than remakes...

If you want to know the film that was chiefly responsible for "gray & gritty" look of all modern sci fi it would have to be Blade Runner.While it's still a great film,it really put this kind of "hyperrealsim" into the genre.A shame,since the colorful "isn't it incredible? Everything is possible!" vision of the past always appealed to me.

that is a great movie and had a great story line, and had a futuristic look but wasn't dependent on it. Supposedly the want to do a remake of it and i but they weaken the story to add more flash bang booms

Yeah! Sci-fi was fun. It was just plain FUN. Then it had to go and get all dystopian on us.
