Car Troubles
Ah, the joys of car ownership. The freedom to go anywhere you want whenever you want, to not be restrained by walking distance, to travel to the ends of the earth, and then pay a hefty bill when the whole thing falls apart.
As I was driving home today from work I started to hear a metallic scraping noise, like something being dragged along the ground, coming from the back of my car. Not being an idiot I pulled over, leaped out, and looked things over. I saw nothing obvious. This did nothing to sooth my concerns and I took it to a local car dealership. A mechanic there poked and prodded, hemmed and hawed and then produced the hypothesis that there was something wrong with the braking system in my car. He informed me that the inside of the break drum on my particular model of car can sometimes fall apart and that was what he thought had happened with my car. I sense a hefty repair bill heading in my direction.
Even better, my shear coincidence I have to get to work early tomorrow morning. Isn't it wonderful how it always happens like that?

Well fortunatly for you replacing a simple brake drum isn't anywhere near as expensive as you think. But that is also dependant on your idea of "Expensive" most brake drums run somewhere between 35 - 60 dollars depending on make, model etc. And if it fell apart inside they will most likely reccomend you change the rear brake shoes as this "falling appart" may have gouged the brake lining up a bit. But if thats not the case and it IS just a simple drum replace it should be less then 80 bucks i would say. a few dollars for the labor and the part. Worst case senario they will reccomend you replace both rear drums and pads which will probably be 200 all said and done and yes that is on the expensive side for most. Hopefully though you get a mechanic who will throw you a bone and just replace the drum itself if everything else is in DECENT shape.

Turns out the mechanic's hypothesis wasn't correct. Apparently enough dust and gunk had gotten in there that it had caused things to start rubbing together, so all they needed to do was clean everything up. I still got charged $90 though.

I know. I don't think I'll be going there again. And to make matters worse, my AC died off. I'm just getting nailed by one thing right after the other.
