A Quick Journal About Tattoos

If you want them to be detailed...
They're gonna have to be big, ok. :I Needles are not QUITE as easy to wield as say, pencils or tablet pens.
A good idea would probably be that if you wanna draw a tattoo for yourself, sketch it up IRL, then ink it with let's say... a 3 or a 5 sized micron pen. that would give you a really good idea or how big something would have to be in order to get the detail you'd like! :>
I just see so many 'tattoo designs' that people think will be the size of a half dollar and they're like, fullcolored, shaded art pieces(WARNING: that was a slight exaggeration). My really simple snakey sillhouette is the size of a half dollar, and that was about as small as I could go and still be able to make out what it is.

I was studying to be a tattoo artist, and still plan on doing so. I want to be covered. The only think that will not be would probably be my face and stomach(unless I think of something to cover my stomach with)
The best way to make an illusion of small. delicate work in a tattoo that you don't want to get too big is to make the outside lines thicker, rather than making the inside ones thinner. You can trick the eye ;3
Some things translate well to skin, and sadly some things don't. :\ It's disappointing to both parties when this happens, but most good artists can find ways around such problems, if given the time and money for the extra work. People just need to understand that skin isn't the perfect canvas, and tattoo machines aren't photoshop paintbrushes.
I also am planning on tattooing most of my body. So far my biggest piece is only 10x6 though, along my outer thigh. *cough cough* FUCKIN' LOVE TATTOOS
The best things you can do thinking about designing a tattoo is look at the lines they create and working with color well. If you don't have something down pat, it can turn out completely wrong, and look really awful, but most tattoo artists are willing to work with you on fixes, within reason. It's just a lot of time and energy more than anything, and actually going to see a tattoo artist to ask about how the design would work and asking for their take on it would really help both parties as well. :>
I've actually got three large pieces in design right now, a half sleeve, and another outter thigh piece that will roughly take up the same space as the one on the opposite thigh, along with the chest piece that's being designed now. Lots of tattoos coming up! :] It's been about a month since I last went for ink and I'm already dying for some more.
People really need to get in touch with their tattoo artists though, y'know? Like, a lot of people show up at random shops and get disappointed in the product they receive, and it's not entirely the tattooers fault. You really gotta get a feel for your artist, go over their portfolios, talk to them, see some of their work irl. It really helps get over the bullshit. You should never be afraid to talk ideas out with your artist, or be afraid to ask for changes in designs.
I mean that more in the sense of you want to LOOK at the tatoos / piercings and ask them about them etc., whereas some people just tend to go straight to 'thug' when they get anything done ;)
Hopefully that makes SOME sense... Dyslexia + too late (or early!) so dead tired. Means it's kind of a jumble ;)
I guess I just think it depends on what you get, and not who gets it, so much. Because you'd be surprised what could look nice on you until you get it! the best thing about piercings though is that if it doesn't look good on you, it's easy to take it out and let the hole close up.
You make a good point about piercings though! :)
