I hate the Olympics. And Jesus Chicken.

No, I actually don't. But a divisive title will get clicks, no?
Anyway, I saw a coulple journals talking about this this afternoon, so I'll throw my two cents in.
What I hate is what they've become. As an idea, they're lovely! Getting countries to compete as well as cooperate... There's no better ideal, is there?
But nowadays it's all about money and winning. Countries compete to see who will get hosting rights, often winning nothing but a short few months of glory and then a bunch of oversized, nigh-unusable buildings and a MASSIVE debt afterwards. Plus nowadays it's an excuse to further militarize already extremely over-equipped police who learn to view EVERYTHING as the enemy. Like in Anaheim, where folks are getting shot in the back of their head, and a peaceful protest against police brutality ends up facing attack dogs, tear gas, and paramilitary SWAT teams in camoflage and armored humvees.
I digress. What I really and truly despise is how the corporations have the run of it now. NBC has the only airing rights over here in the US, and we all know how that's going. An anti-NBC tweeting reporter was singled out by Twitter employees, who brought it to NBC's attention and then guided them through the process of filing a complaint to get his account removed. Visa, McDonald's, and a host of other companies pay to ensure their products are the only ones available at the games. Get caught using a competitor's product and you're thrown out, no questions asked. And seats that SHOULD go to the public are reserved for sponsors and celebrities (who, as we saw in London recently, don't bother or can't fill them).
(CUE ACTUAL RANT)
Also... in an unrelated note, but what's REALLY bothering me, we don't have a Chick Fil A here in Lenoir (we're THAT goddamned poor) but today I happened to go to Hickory for an orthodontist appointment, blissfully unaware that today was the day that asshole Santorum had called for all of god's chosen children to show everyone just how much bigotry and hatred and hypocrisy can pay off. The line of cars was a fucking HALF MILE LONG. Cars were pulling over on the shoulder and in other parking lots and people were RUNNING ACROSS SIX LANES OF TRAFFIC to get their fucking Jesus Chicken fix.
I don't want to live on this planet anymore.

Yer probably not interested in continuing the discussion (an ye are well aware of how contrary Squeaks can be on the subject) but ask yerself this.
When ye say 'Jesus Chicken' an 'asshole' are ye bein'...
-Tolerant?
-Loving?
An if ye are bein' niehter, then it' rather odd to accuse others of bein' 'bigoted' an 'hateful' ifn ye are yerself.
An if ye ARE these things but accuse others of bein it anyway without seein it in yerself, what does that also make ye?
So this is irritatin' the Capn.
JUS SAY IT.
Religion is evil, specifically Christianity. We consider all Christians stupid, evil, ignorant, greedy and wish them all hardship, pain, and at the most death.
This isn' about tolerance or anti-hate or hypocrisy at all.
This is about hatred of religion.
But then, there's no way to prove that. It's just idle conjecture.
I do not believe in limiting the rights of others and denigrating them because of what a 2000 year old book says. I also believe in tolerance, but not when tolerating somethig results in such massive harm. Words are fine, but actions are not. And judging by the discrimination lawsuit being brought against them, they act on those beliefs. Discrimination is illegal in this country, as much as the GOP would like to change that.
And in case you're wondering, I was raised Southern baptist, but over the past year or so, after seeing what hatred christianity in particular brings about, I've decided I no longer wish to be a part of that faith. I have nothig against it. I think the faith itself is fine. It's the people who make up that faith that I cannot stand. If only they would actually follow Jesus' advice instead of simply spouting out of context, cherry-picked verses to justify their cruelty and greed.
Have you read the book of James? Matthew 26:52? John 8:7?
He made an enemy of every major paper and media outlet to SELL his merchandise? He jeopardized his own public ability to even run his franchise as a gimmick?
Brave if stupid idea.
An ye admit to supposin' the worse.
The Capn' doesn' think bad of ye to be honest...but isn' thinking bad of someone jus because of what they believe generally called bein bigoted?
Jus sayin.
Actually ye DO believe in limitin rights an denigrating others because of a book written further back then that: The Code of Hammurabi, arguably the oldest form of law in existence. Do ye believe killers, rapists, an thieves should be free?
No.
Ol'Squeaks is a Christian conservative. By his understandin' intolerance is not inherent in either of those things.
But as a tollerant liberal who hates Christians an republicans surely ye know nothin of such things either.
So ye are angry at people who cherry pick verses...but ye believe we SHOULD believe somethings the Bible says an ignore others?
Granted the Capn' is cautious with The Bible too, but that's because it's a combination of myth, history, and theology.
Ye are literally claiming ye don' want cherry pickin...
But ye only will follow the sayins of Jesus ye believe in...even if ye don' even believe he was divine anyway???
I also did not say that the bible promotes intolerance. Folks use it as an excuse to promote hatred in direct contradiction of what it actually says, sure, and THAT'S what I have a problem with.
So you're saying that because I take offense that someone wishes to limit the rights of my friends and family because of their religion I'm a bigot? I suppose that's technically true, but then the last time I checked, this country was not a theocracy, nor did Jesus espouse one. It's your first amendment right to say your opinion and my right to disagree, but denying the rights of others based on your beliefs is quite against the law.
Lets think back...
-Jesus tells the Zealots (religious fanatics) to 'love their enemies'
-Jesus called the Pharisees (religious authority figures) 'whited sepulchers' and 'brood of vipers' branding their temple a 'den of thieves'
-Jesus tells his disciple who strikes off the ear of a soldier with his sword 'those that live by the sword, die by it' and heals the man who came to arrest him.
-Jesus screams as he died 'Father forgive them! They know not what they do!'
And ye left His church forever because ye don't like his followers?
The Capn' has his own disagreements with the faithful (like his own church that wants to PRAISE VOLCANOS) but he didn't lose his religion.
An yes. Ifn ye hold contempt fer ANYONE because of who they are, ye are a bigot.
Even ifn it's just or unjust, bigot means ye hate someone only because of what they are or what they believe.
...Then does that mean the congressional black caucus has broken the law?
What is the major difference between spirituality and religion to you?
To me one is grounded in fact, history and tradition with a strong background of great thinkers.
The other is poorly defined, wishy-washy, and a fine way to SAY ye are religious without any conviction.
Much like sayin it's better to be someone without a country, that way ye don't commit.
Only ye also ask fer the benefits of citizenship without the responsibility.
Jus whatever someone feels like? In that case what DOESN' count as spirituality? Ye could get a spiritual buzz from grog.
An yes, religion is an organized form of theology, much like law is an organized form of civic rights and mandates.
Much like physics is an organized form of theorems conceren' motion an energy.
Ye seem to have difficulty with anything organized (?)
So it's perfectly fine to believe in matters transcendental...so long as they don't effect your life at all.
Here. Forgot to link. Wow. That was bad of me XD
This seems better to Ol'Squeaks...
"I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept his claim to be God. That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic — on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg — or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronising nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to. ... Now it seems to me obvious that He was neither a lunatic nor a fiend: and consequently, however strange or terrifying or unlikely it may seem, I have to accept the view that He was and is God."
C.S Lewis (a religious scholar)
Also, NBC. The station that regularly loses in ratings to it's sister station, USA. Yeah, a network losing to a cable network. NBC enjoys taking it's chance to shine and repeatedly dropping it on it's head. The internet coverage is good but hey! You need to have a cable package to access it. Wow. Meanwhile, the BBC has it for free for anybody with a UK IP (or possibly euro as a whole, not sure). Truly a cash grab by NBC, eh?
I could go on and on about Olympic coverage, but I'll say this.
Olympics would be hella sweet if it were on PBS in the US.
1: The Capn' does NOT mean to impinge any characters. ifn he has it's his failin. He tends to be intensely analytical.
2: The Capn' is NOT in favor of denyin' people of homosexual persuasion any rights to life or liberty granted by law.
3: The Capn'll go his merry way ifn the furs about ere aren't interested in his rather exhaustively wordy discussions ^^;
Thank ye leastwise fer the discussion as was ifn three proves true :)
You see, to day was ALSO the GLBT's "happy-gay-family passive-agressive day" (thingy. have no clue what the real name was.)
basically, it was called upon in the community, that all glbt rise up.. and eat jesus chicken. particularly the ones that are "destroying marriage" and whom are "molesting their ill-gotten children" while in a happy, public setting. <rant> full of bigots. doing the EXACT opposite thing the bigots keeps saying they do. contently. </rant>
and yes it was the same here. the CITY was back-logged... the news had said the (one) interviewed customer (happy mother-type, with no attached family, or husband/etc. there ... ... ???) that she has been waiting in line for OVER an hour. and was still waiting. apparently had enough time to also give a full interview without losing her spot.
go fig. yeah. as i hear, the primary customer turnout today was in fact, majority glbt. looks like there is more gays then jesus-bigots. (and not to yet include the less radical/fanatical Christians that instead support the glbt yet at all. that number just kind... lop-sides it all.)
anywho, i completely agree with the Olympics thing.
"McDonalds is the official supporter of the 2012 Olympics!"
<rant>
seriously?
so... that's like saying "Anheuser-Busch is the official supporter of your Local AA!" right??
"War is Peace"
"Freedom is Slavery"
"Ignorance is Strength"
... "Pizza is Vegetable"
<nestedrant>
good to see logic is still alive, and intelligence is still kicking, not stabbed in back of a dark ally, violated ruthlessly, and gutted like a fish, left to bleed out alone, with not a single person to care.
after all- the world could have fooled me.
you know? lets spend as much of the world's collective military/war budget into more peaceful exercises , we'd have 1) no need of heaven after death, as "heaven would touch earth", we'd 2) know more about our own oceans then the moon. 3) probably have space travel already. Ai? robots? you get the idea. and: we'd 4) more the likely have solved the problems dealing with food control, population control, and have discovered a high form of energy source that could at LEAST stymie the destruction of our ONLY LIVABLE PLANET'S habitable environments.
</nestedrant></rant>
I wouldn't say we're exactly 'living' here, Bob...
