I just used the console command to complete that quest without killing him. The graybeards are happy, the awesome paarthurnax is still alive, odahviing helps me when I need him and I get a potion from esbern to take less damage from dragon melee attacks; worked out well.

Im on the 360 tho... oh and theres a special pickax as a reference to minecraft up where he is too

Ah console version, shame. I enjoy just playing as a dragon in skyrim mostly these days. Not like there's a shortage of things to see and do.

Yeah, still a work in progress though but it's quite fun. You recieve a spell called 'become a dragon' that lasts until you cast it again. You can choose any of the standard dragon types as well as paarthurnax, odahviing and Alduin as all three of them have unique models. The carry weight and health stats are still in need of upgrading but it's a start. Being able to fly is handy getting places.
