That's actually not a bad representation of what Synesthesia actually is, however, what the father is seeing is a lot more than what most see. Usually a Synesthete will see ribbons or shapes of light, not whole creatures. However, that isn't unheard of. Basically, Synesthesia is the linking of two senses, usually hearing and sight. The mother's sight is linked with taste, the son sniffing records is scent and sight (a certain smell causes him to see a certain colour) or scent and association (which actually seems a lot more likely), and the father is hearing and sight. The boy plugging his headphones into vegetables is a little trickier. I've never heard of a form of Synesthesia like that, but I would assume it sight and hearing; how everything he sees has a unique sound, hence why he wears sound cancelling headphones.
yeah.... doctors had me tested for this when I was a kid; had to read a book about a kid with synesthesia and a whole bunch of other things. I don't have it, though.
not really, aside from the occasional sensory overload. Most Synesthetes are able to live perfectly normal lives (Synesthesia notwithstanding, of course XD), though some have difficulty doing certain tasks. I've heard many Synesthetes have trouble with math because they find the colours produced by the numbers and words to be too distracting, but that's just what I've read in books.
