Never has anyone insulted my art this much
    13 years ago
Ok so, I saw this person's RP ad and started chatting with her. She seemed a little.. I don't know.. Rude, but I didn't let it bother me too much the last time. Today I spoke with her again and she was like that, but I brushed it off, until talking turned to my portfolio and the stuff in it.
Them: Yeah, it's a little barren of "serious" artwork.
How much do you get for commissions like the ones on there?
Me: Design commissions are way underpriced through the community, they're anything from 3 to 8 USD, but my actual commissions are between 30-60 USD
Any examples of the "actual" ones?
Me: https://d.facdn.net/art/natuprunk/1.....ibal_mouse.png This is personal work, but an example of simple line art, no bg, single character
Them: For thirty to sixty bucks?
Damn.
Me: Hmm? Good or bad?
Them: In all honesty? I wouldn't pay even ten, to tell the truth.
Me: Oh? How so?
Them: The lines are a little rough, very uniform. Shadeless flat colors. Not sure what it's supposed to be, is it an original species, or..?
Nice detail on the rodent-like feet, and the staff, and the loincloth fabric.
Not bad hand anatomy at all, either.
Me: That's good to know :V And yeah, that IS an example of a flat colored piece, the species is in the file name. It's just a furry mouse, no real story behind a species or anything. I struggled with the feet and I've been putting extra effort into learning to draw hands, so that was nice to know :)
Them: If it's a mouse, it's pretty heavily stylized. I wouldn't really say it looks much like one, even cartoonized.
That'd explain it, though. Furries tend to pay out the ass for anything. I'd like to know how they get so rich. xD
So, you could overcharge anyway and get away with it, especially if you're willing to do animal dicks and stuff.
I know a lot of people who draw furries and are..pretty awful at animals, but make hundreds of dollars on commissions. You're not bad compared to some of the furry artists I talk to, actually.
I know it's not much compared to the real bashing a lot of amazing people have to go through, but.. She was basically calling my art worthless. And pretty much straight to my face.
After this I told her I was insulted and she did kinda apologize, but she said she was just being honest. A bit after that I let her know that I don't feel our personalities match and that I didn't want to play with her, emphasizing that this was not the only thing, but her whole way of talking to me all the time. She didn't seem to get it, but at least we parted ways like adults..

it was almost actual criticism up until she started making it seem like all 'furry' artists
are bad at what they do.
That was just...rude |:
I hated the fact that she seemed to think the furry community is nothing but porn hungry morons and the way she suggested that was the only reason I could sell my art.. I was insulted for the community's sake as well, that was really what broke the camel's back D:
it's no wonder plenty of people on this site (or any furry related site) tend to
shy away from other communities when there's those kinds of people online \:
it's also especially hard to change peoples' opinion on that sort of thing
when it comes the any furry community so it's all just...one big mess ugh
i'm glad you don't have to keep talking to her and it's really
admirable how you both took departing in a mature
matter.
And yeah, I'm really glad she was mature too, because I really didn't want anyone to get upset, and she eve said her rp offer still stood if I ever changed my mind.
to 'prove' to others uugh
its true though. no matter what community; there will always be ignorance/close-minded people ):
And by 'know' I mean, met once and blocked thereafter. But it wasn't about art. :I
I think it's kind of a dick move to go "Wow, I wouldn't even pay ten for that". The valid points aside, that's fucking rude. If you wouldn't pay for it, then you don't understand art's value. The artist charges what they feel their art is worth. Certainly, you have places to improve, but 30-60 is cheap as hell. Industry art goes for around $500, first payment, very often. Depending on what they are, of course. The online community is spoiled to hell with the oversaturated market, and everyone just asks for spare change in return for their art. $10 is robbery. That person needs to learn serious people skills.
Rudeness and honesty.. some people need to learn the difference.
Oh well, I don't need to deal with her anymore <3
No one is allowed to insult you but me ♥
Yes, YES, hurt me MORE! Make me feel ALIVE again! *geek*
