I'm afraid I don't know what to tell you, because I think you already know everything I do. Your audience isn't getting what you're doing, but that doesn't mean you're doing it wrong. It can mean that, but it can also mean your audience isn't 'right' to get it. I don't want to say they're unintelligent, because that would be wrong for so many of them, just that they aren't getting it because... well, if I knew the why, I could tell you something you didn't know. The best analogy I can think of is like a pun in one language doesn't go well into another. Except, puns are kinda terrible and people generally dislike them. so i'm not good at analogies, but you get what I'm trying to say. I hope. I've learned I don't communicate my thoughts well. That or most people aren't 'right' to get them.
Keep trying new ways to get messages through. I'm going to guess you love writing for more than the feeling of making the story; you like sharing it. That's why you're posting it here.
The only advice I can give that you (maybe (by some (small) chance)) didn't hear or think of before is to seek out a specific audience, a writer's group or something. Get people reading who understand the finer points of literature. (I like bluntness, myself.) Because I think you'll be able to share your stories better if you look for people who understand the subtler things the rest of your readers don't normally get.
Good luck, and don't give up. You're one of the best writers I've read online, and you certainly write better stories than I've managed to. (my characters are all just me in different clothes and skins. :P) Trust me when I say the problem has nothing to do with the quality of your work.
