What do YOU do in these situations?
Scenario: You're chatting with someone online who you've known for a bit and decide to share pics with them. You go first and the other person says "You're really cute!" or something similar, so you take it as a compliment and wait for the return pic. When you get it the other person isn't really appealing by your standards, doesn't mean they're not cute, just means you don't find them cute personally.
What would you say to them? Would you say cute even though it's not really how you feel so you don't hurt their feelings, or do you play it off differently?

I think I'd be honest and tell them they aren't really my type.

Well it depends. Are they flirting with you? Are they hitting on you on any way? If it's obvious they're attracted to you, that's the only time you need to be forthcoming and say they're not your type. No need hurting their feelings unnecessarily. :P

True, but if someone just says you're cute and then sends you a picture, one has to wonder if they're expecting a similar response, even if not hitting on you.
