So, that term...

I get called "popufur" a surprising amount, and I'm not always sure if the individual calling me that is saying that lovingly or spitefully. If it's lovingly, then stop...cuz it's a silly, awkward term. Hell, anything with "fur" replacing a part of an existing word is pretty dumb.
I'll admit I'm "well known" and "recognized" in the fandom. Whether that's a good or bad thing I guess depends on the situation.
I'll boil my recognition down to one specific: I get drawn. A LOT. I don't hide the fact that I love seeing myself. And while this is a generalization, I think the "spiteful" popufur name-callers probably want the same thing.
So here's a tip: SUPPORT ARTISTS. If you have expendable income, throw an artist you admire a few bones to get yourself drawn. That's easy. And this is a social network of art: the more you commission yourself in pictures, the more people will recognize your character. Again, easy.
If you don't have expendable income, DON'T COMPLAIN TO ARTISTS THAT YOU WISH YOU COULD COMMISSION THEM AND THEN DON'T THROW THEM MONEY. Your desire to commission them does not outweigh the actual money you'd give them to have it done.
I don't openly announce which drawings I get as commissions and the ones I get as gifts, simply because that's up to the artist to say whether they did it for fun or for funds. I certainly don't want to overwhelm an artist with moochers if they drew me because they wanted to. "But you drew Duncan for free!!" is the last thing I want artists to have to deal with.
The point of this post: SUPPORT ARTISTS WITH YOUR MONIES, and you can be as popufur as me.

FA+

I only use fur to replace per in persona [with fursona] but thats mostly it. *shrug*
a) You've been around for quite a while ( not that I'm trying to make you feel old or anything )
b) Your character is distinctive and easy to recognize.
c) You have a fursuit of your character, which always amplifies the recognition factor. You're a visible presense in both artwork and real life.
d) You're probably the best known macro-fur, which is a very popular subculture of the fandom.
e) You have a reputation for being a nice guy and a great ambassador for the fandom ( despite the tail dangling ). I've never heard a bad word said about you.
So you tick a lot of boxes there, which is why the pics are going to keep coming.
As for the word 'popufur'... wasn't that first used as a joke during one of the AC skits or something? It was always intended to just be a joke.
So you could say furry's can blame themselves for such a dumb play with words technique.
Aside from that however, I have to say that working to get popular just because you have a better income than someone else is a bit childish. What are the people actually doing (Besides helping support artists I mean). This is something I never truly understand, cause its the artists who are doing all of the work here not the people who are paying for it...
Then again this is the furry fandom I suppose, and the way the world works is that money can buy friends (Half way one's if that). I'm glad these 'popular' people support the artists that draw them, but I don't think they should be getting the 'popular' credit at all... you're getting drawn a lot, so what?
Anyways, that's just my point of view on all this bullshit. I will always support the people working hard to draw great art or write great stories, but I wont ever support those taking short cuts just to try and be popular.
That and Most of friendship based on popularity aren't good, I said "Most" XD
And you're right completely, SUPPORT ARTISTS! WITH BONES... Why I feel Dirty suddenly?
But yeah, Support them! They need Money and Motivation... Like me, I need money and Definitely Motivation,
Being Well-known Isn't bad at all, heck it happens automatically when you DO commission, and your character is Signaturefully (Yes, It's a Word now) Unique with Interesting idea and concept, that attracts alot of attention,
Being Drawn with or Hanging With Popular people also tend to do that, Which can be... bad actually, Half of the times those Popular people are hated and the ones who love them love them for mere reason of popularity...
Heck Once I knew someone who used to be a Great guy, but he wanted fame so he kept hanging with the popular ones, as if he was begging for them to throw some popularity in his way... That kinda made him ignore his REAL friends, Now, He's a Douchebag,
Aaaand Some words in Furry term can be funny and fun to use, but yeah, "Popufur" sounds... really stupid ^^;
Wow, I talk like a Women XD
I do commission a lot of people as well for the same reason, that you mentioned. I'm able to support artists and I love to see myself drawn. My girlfriend used to call me narcistic because of that, but oh well. XD
Still I think there is another reason why you are so popular...
>_> <_<
I'm pretty sure that it's your colour! ;)
But I think it shouldn't be based around how "Popular" You are! It should be based on what you enjoy within the fandom, and for whatever you do might it be video streaming, commissions, story writing, art drawing or even simple as Fursuiting.
Just my opinion about the whole "Popufur" concept.
Although having a awesome color like green tends to help!
To work off that list above that seanc posted...yes, you've been here for a while, and the suit's a big plus, but most of all you have your niche. Everyone knows you as the macro fur. People know you for that, they know donamer and riproarrex for things involving feet, they know daniel_kay for things involving bovines, etc. If you have a niche that you fill that few others do very well, then you'd get a lot of attention for that.
Admittedly, I personally would like to be "popufur" to some extent, if only because I want to have some kind of influence as to the direction certain things in the fandom go. And it doesn't take all that much to make that happen if you plan right!
