Gaming In Japan
Hey all. So I've got a strange issue here in Japan: Steam prices. Turns out they charge the Oceanic prices for games here, so a lot of stuff is hella expensive (big name titles are $70-80 USD as opposed to the usual $50-60). So I've been looking into getting cheaper PS3 and DS titles, since they're region free. Trouble is I'm having trouble finding stuff I A) Want and B)Don't need to understand. So all RPGs are right out, since those are all about story. Anyone got any good suggestions on what to keep an eye out for when it comes to Japan exclusive stuff? Calling all gamers, help me out here.
[Edit] Okay, probably wasn't all that clear, what with all the Steam recommendations being thrown my way. I'm good for Steam games. I've got at least twenty of the damn things I haven't even touched yet. Not to mention just about everything Steam related is marked up here. I'm looking for recommendations for PS3, PSP, and DS Japanese-exclusive titles. Crap like those massive series cross-overs that never see a stateside release due to trademark issues.
Also to the Civ players, is Gods and Kings worth it? It's $40 here. Is it worth the price or should I wait until I get back stateside to get it.
Also also; Hearthfire isn't available in my region for some bullshit reason. What the crap are they doing that? I can understand why the PS3 isn't getting it, due to hardware issues, but there's nothing wrong with the PC version. Hell North America has it already. So why is there a release lag on online DLC? That doesn't make any freaking sense to me.

FA+

For Steam, there is some indie titles I know like FTL, Torchlight 2, Krater.
and some oldies like the XCOM series
Heartfire is pretty meh for a DLC
Yes Gods and Kings is awesome, only if you want the extra content i.e. Spies & Faith being the biggest changes, re balancing of culture, more military units, rebalancing of policies to reflect the addition of faith.
But the Gods and Kings recommendation is good. More content is generally what I'm looking for with DLC.
So far I'm enjoying dq9 but that's because I have people to party with locally, then again if you have friends in japan, odds they might have a copy of it.
The Steam related games are of the RPG genre if not leaning on strategy.
By the way, you've played Call of Cthulhu? Didn't know that. I tried it myself, wasn't terribly impressed. Heard nothing but good things about the Penumbra and Amnesia series though. And Thief always gets good write ups, even though I wasn't too fond of the Deadly Shadows game.
I don't own either a PS3 or DS, I'm afraid, so my recommendations are pretty useless here. I think all I've played have been from your house. Sorry.
As for game recommendations... I can't really think of anything that you can't find stateside as well. So...best I can recommend is to just web-search for recent releases or whatnot.
I recall Battle Stadium DON... for an anime brawler on console. Aaand... Shonen Jump Allstars(? or something like that) for DS. Both basically being Smash Bros I think... XP (there's a new Rourouni Kenshi game on DS too now that I think about it)
Nothing else comes to mind off the top of my head that isn't an rpg... XP I'm a bit out of date on things. XP
And yeah, Jump Super Stars and Jump Ultimate Stars. Great games. Imported them both a while back. Ultimate Stars is newer and has more characters to play, but Super Stars have these cool combined attacks that pair up certain characters. Let's you do the Yugi pops out of Bobobo's Afro attack, which is brilliant.
