Wow, health issues... Taking commissions to raise medical $$
13 years ago
So over the summer, I started experiencing some shoulder pain when moving or rotating the arm in certain positions. It's gotten better since its worst point, when I'd hardly be able to move my arm anywhere between the relaxed state with hand at my waist and raising the hand up to shoulder level without feeling pain. Nowadays, it's only, again, painful in certain positions, some of which are unfortunately practical (such as pouring from a milk gallon - breakfasts are quite unfortunate).
So of course, at the beginning I ignored it for a while, and figure it'd go away, thinking I probably just slept on it wrong. But sadly a few months later it's not gone away. Faced with the risk of serious shoulder injury, particularly in my dance competition season, I decided I needed to explore medical treatment. My options after surveying some colleagues (including my dance partner) included chiropractic care, acupuncture, and surgery (ouch). Since I didn't wanna be cut open or poked with needles, chiropractic care seemed to be the way to go, and my partner was able to refer me to her own chiropractor (and the very one who has encouraged her to pursue her doctorate in chiropractic science).
Of course, these kinds of places aren't quick-fix places, and my injury isn't necessarily a quick-fix problem either. After an initial set of tests, we learned that there's pretty extreme stress/pressure in my neck, and that there is imbalanced muscle tension along my neck and back that seem to agree with either causing my shoulder pain or are my body's reaction to compensate for the shoulder pain. I had gotten X-rays to see if there's anything about the skeletal structure to explain the issues that seem to stem from the neck area.
Apparently the curve of my cervical spine is curved in the wrong direction. Some of my critical vertebrae in my neck have started to degenerate, and I'm prone to some serious issues if left untreated. So in addition to the chiropractic adjustments I'll be receiving a couple times a week, I will have to perform some daily exercises to attempt to correct the reversal of my cervical spine curve.
I feel like I went to a car mechanic for an oil change and learned about a bunch of other things that are going wrong. And charged accordingly. But I suppose it can't be an issue ignored if it's discovered now, so I've got this massive medical expense ahead of me (to the tune of greater than $4000), and I've gotta figure out a way to deal with that.
So needless to say, I will be open for commissions and will set myself a personal goal of accepting and completing $350 worth of commissions a month, though I ideally would like to earn faster than that because my financial commitment for the treatment is accelerated. Donations are welcome too, though you will definitely receive something of comparable value in return in artwork, even if you do not request it!
Here's to hoping that I can get everything fixed. And that my shoulder stops hurting :P

And, tips always welcome and much appreciated
Please definitely share with people you know who may be interested in contributing in exchange for art!

I'll note ya later on a commission I was thinking of having you doing.
{{{Hugs}}}
At any rate, I'd be down for an icon commission.
I'll be sure to note you a commission idea once I get my first paycheck!
I will step up to the plate to help you out. Would you be willing to do a 3-4 sequence pic of my beagle character transforming into my new goat character? I can send reference.
FYI - I put the word out on my journal for you. Hopefully the word keeps spreading out and you are able to cover your bills. Take care!
If you go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiropractic and look up the sections on effectiveness, you will see that there is very weak support for the use of chiropractic care for such things as adult and adolescent scoliosis. You should also look at the risk-benefit section.
Realistically, here's what you probably should be doing.
1. Consider talking to a physical therapist about your shoulder.
2. Get a second opinion about this neck-thing. The last thing you need is for him to go doing a neck adjustment, only for you to end up with a slipped disk (as what happened to a friend of my former GP) or other negative consequences.
3. If you've got insurance, you should see about talking to an orthopedic specialist/sports medicine physician. Considering you're concerned about the impact that your shoulder could have during your dance competition season, I think it's valid to talk to such a person.
I hope your shoulder gets better, hun!
Short of it, the chiropractic adjustments actually are not to address the spinal curvature - they're aimed at doing just what they're supposed to do, which is relief of tension or pressure along the spine. I'll have a number of self-exercises to do for the neck thing (in addition to better computer desktop posture), and I'll definitely be looking to get a referral and do some research on providers in my employer's network for orthopedic specialist and physical therapy.
Hope it's something you can get fixed fairly easily. *puppyhugs*
We wish you the very best here and hope everything goes good with your chiro therapy *hugs super tight*
Good thought and prayers your way.
I would highly advise you to read the wiki article on Chiropractic: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiropractic
"A 2008 critical review found that with the possible exception of back pain, chiropractic manipulation has not been shown to be effective for any medical condition.[16] Health claims made by chiropractors regarding use of manipulation for pediatric health conditions are supported by only low levels of scientific evidence[106][132] that does not demonstrate clinically relevant benefits."
My mother used to take me and my brother to one when we were in high school sports until I refused to go, because it's a scam. Ask any skeletal specialist with a real PhD, chiropractology is actually considered bunk by most doctors.
I'll also be taking my x-ray results to another specialist just to get another perspective (though I can't change the picture - they're also gonna say, "Yeah, your neck isn't curved the right way..."). There's actually a sports medicine/orthopedist nearby that I'm gonna call once I can get my x-rays from the diagnostic radiologist office to see if there's something more local I can do about my shoulder in the immediate term while I continue with my dance season.
Spread he word for ya
