This is where I currently live, Springfield, MO. I would NOT have been surprised had that been a guy ACTUALLY saying those things without the twist ending, because we have FUCKLOADS of Southern Baptist churches, here, although we ALSO have several universities (both major and non-major) and a fairly prominent gay community. I'm glad this guy represents our city, and I hope that there are more religious people who come to feel the same way as he did.

Funny, I said the same thing about several arguments made about gay rights before. Its almost a carbon copy of the reasons why blacks could not have the same rights as whites. Not defending anything, but if you do your research most of the scriptures people tend to try and use to debase christian arguments are far from what they're commonly though to mean. Same goes for the verses christians often use to condemn things

It's people like you who need to understand the truth about being gay. I am 59 years old and gay all my life. I can remember at age SEVEN that I was different, and had drawings to show I KNEW the difference.

I always hate this argument

Looking at the evidence, people I know, and my own personal experiences, being gay isn't something that 90% of people who are gay choose to be. I hit puberity and was attracted to guys, that's all I know about me. I never liked girls sexually or romantically after puberity even though by all other accounts I was a totally normal boy growing up and interested in "guy" things.

At the same time you can't really say that people who are gay were *born* that way. It isn't that simple. You could have 3 brothers all grow up the exact same way and one will end up gay, simply due to his personality type and interests naturally having him like guys when he is of-age. You could have a guy who grows up in the most gay friendly environment possible but still be straight.

It's "genetic" in the sense that some people are going to be born with their brains wired in a certain way that makes homosexual interests the only possible choice. Other people are born with their hard-wiring not being like that, but maybe their childhood experiences make them bisexual or gay. Other people aren't really gay at all, maybe hetero-bi, but due to their experiences in life *choose* to be gay, as a type of statement or interest rather than being "hard wired" to like guys.

There's no hard evidence that you are born with a gay gene just as much as there being no evidence that gay people *choose* to be gay (when in fact, most gay guys growing up would rather be straight - I know I did. If it was a choice, I would have been straight growing up, even though now I totally accept it as a part of my being).

The truth is most likely in the middle - people who are gay almost always never choose to be gay, but why they become gay is probably a complex series of events molded by not only genetics/personality type, but the type of experiences that person has and how their mind develops as a child in response to those experiences.

Sexual orientation is something you're born with and your brain has sub-conscious control over it. It's not a mental disorder since it could be categorize with normal things, whether you're born to be more playful or serious, athletic or lazy, hygienic or sloppy. It's not something that needs to be fixed, but if we wanted to we could drug someone to change their habit.

No offence dude but how hard did you look?? Why not start out with the APA or some of the other acreditied mental health reserch bodies? As I have said before they all have come to the same conclusion.

I actually took a look APA's info on sexual orientation, and well you're right. Since we know very little about how sexuality works and can only assume that it's involves our mind, body, and how we reacted to society, we may never figure out how to medicinally change one's sexual orientation, even if it's possible.

I'm going to be honest. I didn't look at all since this doesn't interest me to the point of informing myself more about especially since knowing this information isn't really going to make a difference on how I treat or respond to people with different sexual orientations. Don't get me wrong, just because it doesn't interest me doesn't mean it doesn't matter. I'm not interested in looking up complex mathematical formulas, but they're still beneficial to the advancement of our world.

With what little I do know on the subject, gay people don't choose to be gay, they're not hurting anyone, the world has managed to go on with homosexuals for billions of years now, and no form of science, religion, or logic will ever tell me it's wrong.
I know it's good to know more about this subject, but is there really more I NEED know about this? Plenty of emphasis on the "need".

Here's something important about some gay rights activists and supporters.
Some really take offense to being told that blacks or women had it harder since gays can hide it. Though it's true, they don't like the idea of being told to hide their sexuality under any circumstance. Also, some just don't like being compared to other civil rights movements the way you'd compare a child to their older better off sibling.

Yeah I'm learning that today, I just don't like people comparing gay rights to colored rights or women's rights. Because unlike the other two things, you can't tell if someone is gay or lesbian just by looking at them. Other than the stereotypes anyway.

I can say with confidence that the only things you will find are "medical" associations with an agenda to push, with little or no review or science to back up what they say.

I too am a Christian fur. Christ has also mention that when speaking to his disciples that the greatest commandment of all is to "Love thy God with all of your heart" the second greatest is to "Love thy neighbor" "Neighbor" includes everyone not just those who agree with you, not just those who look like you, or love like you. So often zealotry has been used to justify heinous acts, shameful blots on the record of history. Be it the Dark Ages, the Crusades, the Spanish Inquisition - is it not a religious fervor behind each of these regressive times in human history? How about the burning of the Library of Alexandria?
