I found a 3d render of the redesign on deviantart that makes her look somewhat better, but I agree that the gloves are a little off-putting. Same with the simplified, orbish head.

I'm concerned with the supposed "larger game plan" that the redesign is heralding, especially with Ian behind the wheel, writing-wise, but maybe it won't be as bad as I think.

I've seen that render as well. It's extremely well done, and looks as Video Game ready as anything I've seen her rendered as.

He's hit and miss with me; for the most part, he had a good run pre-issue 200, then he got stuck in a rut. He did a good job with "Genesis", even though it proved pointless, and now he's got some good ideas going, but he's still having issues fleshing all of them out. He's got a lot of potential, but he has a tendency of wasting it, in my opinion.

Annoyed mostly by the tail and head change. Outfit is kind of nice.

Huh, yeah. Don't know what's going on with the tail. But the overall style is pretty much how the main artist, Tracey Yardley, draws her already.

I'm also horrified at the prospect of Sega getting interested in the comics.

The reason I moved away from the comics was because it became too much of a soap opera. I mean, for around 50 issues, all the arguments were about who would get Sally, Sonic or Knuckles?

It was beyond annoying and Sonic isn't NEARLY as skillful or powerful in the comics as he is in the canon universe.

I also got sick of the comics trivializing the chaos emeralds, showing of several hundred million through the course of the comics, when there are only seven and then the Master to control them.

Basically, the ONLY good 'somewhat archie inspired' game that had been made was Sonic Spinball as it had next to no story and the 'supporting cast' was relegated to the bonus minigames, which you could flat out fail right away and never see anyone.

I'm also a person who grew increasingly irritated at the name "Robotnik" over the years when I learned that his name has always BEEN Eggman, hence why EVERYTHING was "Egg- something" or "something - Egg".

That, and he was designed by mixing Teddy Roosevelt with a chicken egg :3

I'm just going to point out a few things. So take what I say as a grain of salt. Currently, the comics only do have seven Chaos Emeralds. All the thousands merged to make just seven. I know you gave up on the comic, but your rant about the emeralds loses grounds when it's outdated; just a simple point. Two, Sonic decimated an entire army on his on in a comic last year. I get you don't like the comics, but using out of date information seems kind of...

I had given up on the comics around the time SA2 was released for the dreamcast, at which point I got a DC and Sonic adventure 1 and 2.

The reason for me giving up was because of how these games told a very interesting action packed story without drowning it with some love triangle and how incredibly important to everything the Chaos Emeralds had become due to the god Chaos who, in a simple moment of rage, wiped the echidna species off the planet.

The closest to any sort of 'love issue' has been some discussion of Knuckles and Rouge possibly getting together, though the biggest complaint is that Heroes takes place pretty soon after the end of SA2 and scraps the idea.

Of course it also scraps Eggman turning over a new leaf as he learned his quest for conquest was spurred on by the machinations of his grandfather, Gerald Robotnik, who planned to destroy the planet when everything was said and done.

... Now I'm off on another tangent XD.

On one last note that I laughed pretty hard at was in Sonic Generations when Past and Present Eggman are together.

Past Tails points at Past Eggman and yells "Dr. Robotnik!" and Eggman flatly replies: "Nobody calls me THAT anymore!" XD

At least Robotnik was a name I could take seriously the name Eggman is just non threatening. his weapons yeah those are dangerous the man behind them however is not no matter what he's up to.

After seeing seeing her design as Mecha Sally, I knew she would get a revamp when the process was eventually erased. I like the look. Given how many characters wear gloves, I'll give it a chance.

She looks really nice, I'm just tired of seeing those white gloves on cartoon characters in general. It's a tired cliche carrying over from early animations in the 40's. It doesn't bother me on a lot of other characters, like the official Sega cast and Mario and such, but it just looks out of date on Sally to me.

I wish Sega would make games with more serious stories like the comics. I would be worried if it was some time ago, but with Sonic games starting to get good again I'm hopeful.
Not liking the Sally redesign though, looks too much fan character to me (even as a concept art).

They did try that with Sonic The Hedgehog (2006), but if you've played that game, then you know how horribly buggy it turned out. Granted that doesn't mean the story was bad, then again, a lot of people hated the whole human character Elise having romantic affections for Sonic.

Sonic Chronicles, also had a very Archie Comic styled story, that was really reminiscent of the whole Knuckles Dark Legion arc.

Reminiscent? You misspelled the words BLATANT RIP OFF. Seriously, I found it to be a carbon copy with the names changed. An entire group of mechanically advanced echidnas are banished to another dimension and form up a group called the dark whatever (who wear spiffy black outfits that conceal their faces) and then after they're all but forgotten they punch a hole between dimensions and invade. One warrior amongst the droves seems to stand out and -gasp- they shockingly turn out to be a girl whom Knuckles quickly finds interest in and vice versa. She then helps them defeat her own people and I just spoiled a game from four years ago so nobody should be crying. The only difference is they "enslaved" alien creatures to help them. I know I'm probably blowing up about this in the wrong place at the wrong time but I've just wanted to say it for a long time. >.>

Yes, yes I know. I was just being kind. Either way Sega has it's hands in either property at this point. In fact, If you dig up the Sonic Super Special magazines, they include an official timeline for all things in the Mobius Universe.

They've manage to shoehorn the Nocturnus tribe in the echidnas early history. They apparently were sent to the same place the Dark Legion were banished to. So Expect to see Shade at some point in the actual story.

Well you figure that 10-15 years ago no one took a second look when they saw characters walking around in the nude but those same kids grew up into the kind of people that would draw porn like that.

Just going to put this one out there but... I don't even see why there's any controversy here. Sally's previous design was minimal at best and this hardly seems like much of a change. So she's wearing different clothes, there's all blue and she's still got boots and a vest. I didn't realize it was even supposed to be a redesign. She's still recognizable.

We're discussing, not complaining. I like the new design, even though in my opinion from a design stand point I think the gloves are unnecessary. But there are people who don't, I thought it would be fun to hear why.

I'm more worried about how much influence Sega will have with the story itself, rather than the character designs. Which, if you read and enjoy the comic, is kind of a big deal. One of the things that the writer Ian Flynn said in the second link I posted, was that Sega is taking much more interest in the development of the comic and it's characters. This could very well mean great news, or it could end restraining some of the creativity I've seen in the past stories.

Well..I've had a couple days to process this. So I think I have somewhat of an opinion on it now. I think change is good. Ian is right, things just get stale if they never change. Sally might be long over due. Not sure if I'll ever draw her final design..because I am pretty old school, and I love the way she looks..I don't think I gotta tell anybody how much of a diehard Sally fan I am..my art pretty much does that for me, but who knows, it might look good in the end...and of course, I love the idea of giving her something to strip off! x) Now, what do I think of the new design..well, I hate it. I like the closed vest and the boots and the idea of shorts is a good one, cause that's totally what Sally would wear..just really don't like the shorts they picked. Personally I think a pair of jean shorts would be better. The gloves...terrible! I can't stand the gloves! And her huge bulbous head? Yikes! The boot redesign..meh. They're making her look more like a SEGA game character and, I just don't like the games very much..as far as character design and story is concerned. They have their epic moments in the games, and I do love playing the games, I fricken love playin those games!...but it's way to campy at times, and just way to cutesy. The world that Sally has been apart of, has always been a much darker setting, more so in the old Satam series I guess then in the comics, but I still much more prefer that story, to the games story. Satam I think did it best, but the comics have been makin a come back thanks to Ian and his current team of artists. They brought a lot of actual story back to things, breathed a lot of new life into the book, and so I think the Sally redesign could be a good thing too. :) As long as they never touch her personality, then I am ok with things, but I do have a line I guess..they could design a pretty horrid Sally, and that would suck. The current design, is kinda teetering on the terrible, but it has potential. I should never be on that design team however..x) I would pay way to much attention to sex appeal..they're trying to get away from that a little bit, I'm assuming.

If I had any suggestions though, I'd say, jean shorts...they wouldn't have to be blue, maybe a totally different color. I like the closed vest white tank top combo. Boots...maybe lose the dark blue in the centre..but they gotta stay blue and they gotta be knee high boots. And...lose the gloves!! I guess I could get used to the head shape..but that would change anyways, depending on the artist.

Now, if SEGA does start stepping in and taking more control, story plot wise....then it'll truly be a sad day, indeed. Unless they made an Archie world style Game :)...which, would never happen now. Would just confuse a ton of people out there...and they'd screw it up anyways. So actually, now that I think about it..that would suck too. Those two worlds just don't mix. Best to keep doin what they're doin, stay outta things as much as possible, and let Ian handle it. It's workin so far. Anyways, that's my thoughts. :)

I'm pretty sure she'll end up looking different depending on who draws her. Steven Butler is notorious for giving the female characters some rather voluptuous bodies. One of the former artists, Dawn Best, liked putting "curves" on them too. :3

I think a game featuring those characters isn't too farfetched though. The closest I've seen to something similar was definitely the game Sonic Chronicles. An RPG adventure type game could work.

Odds are, it's because it wasn't the image they wanted everyone to have of Sonic.
That version was much more puzzle based while Sega saw Sonic as a speedster more than a puzzle solver.
Either way, I can see the opinion of both sides and I understand them.
But in the end, Sega went with what they though would be better for their mascot and decided not to gamble.
As for Project-Demise's opinion. That's kinda harsh. I mean, it's thanks to Sega if we had most of the Arcade games.

I only know Sally from the SATAM series, the archie comics never reached me in the UK but i was an avid collector of the Fleetway ones (Sonic The Comic). find it annoying that there isn't a anthology for the Fleetway comics.

Like Archie comics for you, the Fleetway series is near impossible to come by in the U.S. I really wanted to follow up on that one too.

The gloves don't bother me. It's simply part of the Sonic style. I actually really like the fact they want her to meld better with the game characters.

It's more the color scheme and style. They don't meld well with her outfit to me.

I never really read the comics, so I never became much of a Sally fan, but the design looks fine to me. Maybe a bit to "busy", but still stylish.

I'm not a follower of the comic, but at least somewhat familiar with the storyline and general art style. But, damn, those gloves are way too huge. Her arms are semi-proportional to her body, but then add those gloves and she can scratch her ankles while standing straight up.

Just curious if Sega would be interested in her more like this and if she'd suddenly make an appearance in a game other than Sonic Pinball.

Well, either way, It's not like I didn't like the designs since the beginning, I've always been a fan of the artwork. I just didn't see enough of the show to go into the comics and I didn't know about the comics until I got one by pure randomness during one of my trick or treat runs... Ironically, issue 100.
^^; It's... well, let's just say it's not fairing too well. I was careless back then. But it's thanks to that comic if I can Sonic style drawn hands well and also got back into the Sonic Franchise, I had forgotten about Sonic after Sonic & Knuckles. But it's thanks to Sonic Adventure 2 if I got much better at drawing Sonic characters... Though I kinda have my own little style in there.
