D: SO sorry to hear this. Rats are quite resilient creatures. So hopefully she will pull through whatever it is that is ailing her very soon.

Keep her warm and keep her with plenty of fluids and just hang on until the vet opens. Did you find out what made your other rat pass away?

My rat Vera had a massive uterine tumor. : (
Vetsa has no tumors as far as I can tell. She was the spitting image of health before today.

I recently lost a rat to massive uterine tumors. I know how that is, cursed female ratties~ Have you handled Vetsa at all lately? Poked her tummy and felt for tumors? Is she losing weight at all? We had a roommate whose rat we thought was choking but it turned out the uterine tumor she had was pressing against her lungs and causing fluid build up. :C I really hope this is not the case with your girly though. I know how hard it is to lose ratties so close together. I lost said tumor rat a week after losing another girl to CHF.

Oh man I'm so sorry for your losses. :( It comes with having an animal with such a short life span...but I never can fully prepare myself when they finally pass on...Bleh.
I have actually felt Vesta's tummy to make sure she didn't have anything internal. I could feel Vera's tumor when I felt her belly but Vesta feels right as rain, as far as I can tell! I checked her just a few days ago. I'd check now but I think handling her stomach's gonna just make her feel worse so I'm going to let her rest for a while. She shifts and responds when I open the cage but she's still quiet and limp so...I guess all I can do is wait until morning, I think...And pray she feels better soon.

The reddish discharge is not blood, do not worry about that! When a rat is sick or stressed, they get excessive discharge from their eyes and nose, It's like ratty tears/snot and is call prophin (or something like that).

As for the salivating, the only time I see a rat drool is when they are either choking or have fluid in their lungs. Does it look like she is gagging, heaving, or anything like that? Rats cannot vomit either.

I found out that rats can't vomit from a site I went to earlier haha...
She hasn't eaten much today. And when she was salivating she was sticking her tongue out and opening and closing her mouth, so I think it did look a bit like a choking gesture. Right now she's alright (relatively) but she's in the corner of her cage just being completely still, like she has been most of the day...

Is she still drooling and making that motion? She may have been choking. If she is still breathing and not making that motion, she should be fine. I would still take her to the vet since depending on what she was choking on (if she was) she may have some abrasions in her throat which may need some anti-inflamatories or something.

If she is still doing this, do NOT move her too much or try to help. You might just end up making things worse. Sometimes it can take an hour or more for a rat to clear their throat due to the obvious vomiting issue. Stay calm cause if you freak out, it'll freak her out too.

I assume she only did it for a few minutes, or maybe more than that because I walked in on her in the middle of it. I handled her only to wipe the discharge from her mouth and nose. She's in her cage now resting.
I'm going to contact the vets when the open tomorrow.

I wish the best for you and her! I've owned many a rat and I've had them get almost everything. I'm the type of dad who freaks out over the slightest sniffle. All my girls get belly pokes after Rug since I felt terrible for not catching it early on. Gaga is on her second mammary tumor so after FF, gotta drop the dime to get it removed. It's small,not growing quickly and isn't malignant (as far as I can tell) so it's not too big of a rush. It's only the size of a very small grape.

I've had many rats and losing them is never easy. I wish they lived forever. They are such amazing critters. I can't imagine my life without them. Anyway, keep an eye on her through out the night, make sure she is drinking water. If she goes for a bit after this without food, it might be because her throat is sore. If you are extremely concerned, offer her things like baby food which is basically liquid. Even if she seems bright, chipper, and back to normal in the morn, still bring her to the vet.
