I think breaking the 4th wall is the cheapest form of humor. (I don't consider groin kicks to be humor. At all.)
BUT, it's also my favorite form of humor. Despite how dumb and easy it is. There's just something I enjoy about the sudden disorienting turn of events where you realize you're being spoken to directly.
The best is, of course, the muppets. Somehow they do it without pulling you out of the story at all.
