Shemales are intersexuals.

Hermaphrodites by technical definition have fully-functioning copies of *all* the sex-specific facilities in both genders. They don't need to have both at the same time (fish, frogs), but they have to potentially fully function as both genders. That's the definition of a hermaphrodite.

Intersexuals, on the other hand, aren't entirely male or female. "Shemales" for instance have a feminine appearance, but male genitals instead of and lacking female genitals. They're also called futanari or just dickgirls.

The vast majority of "hermaphrodites" on FurAffinity are actually intersexuals, and *all* hermaphrodites on FurAffinity also use the wrong gender symbol.

Every place I've seen the use of the term 'dickgirls', mostly the OMGHYOOMAN sites, was in reference to hermaphrodites.

Heck, if you wanna get technical, futanari is actually Japanese for Hermaphrodite.

And doujinshi is Japanese for "a book for those of similar interests", but you don't see the Latin world using their words properly, since we use it to mean a fan manga, particularly a pornographic one.

Nitpicking aside, considering the use of futanari on the internet was derived from the use of it on the internet over in Japan's imageboards, I really doubt there was really much chance for it to mutate in meanings.

I'm one of those few crazy furries who don't particularly like herms in general. There are a few herm characters that I don't mind, but they are far in the minority.

I particularly don't like herms either. To each their own, I guess.

Hermaphrodites are probably the most hit-or-miss subject you can try.

For one, since humans cannot actually be hermaphrodites, you can't really get a real-life example that applies well to the character you're trying to draw.

Secondly, as you said, a lot of hermaphrodites are really scary.

I generally prefer characters who are hermaphrodites by happenstance and do not place any particular emphasis on that trait, and with a primarily feminine appearance.

Just so you know, Shadowill's only "shemale" character (far as i recall, term used rather loosely) is Dameeji (IF THE ARTIST IS READING THIS, PLEASE CORRECT ME IF WRONG)

There's a lot of misconception all around. I've had people say that my character is a shemale because shi has balls, and that herms don't have balls. Crazy!

Basically, a shemale is a male with breasts. They're generally very feminine, but don't have to be. Although some people play characters who are born as shemales, shemales are often males who act femininine, wear girly clothing, and maybe take hormones. The line between male and shemale is pretty thin, since males can be feminine and shemales can be masculine. Basically though, penis + breasts = shemale.

A hermaphrodite is both genders at once. In nature, slugs and earthworms are hermaphrodites, because they have both male and female reproductive organs. So a furre herm would have to have both. Here's where it gets confusing though; a herm wouldn't have to have breasts, since in nature a hermaphrodite is just a creature with both reproductive organs, and not all creatures produce milk.
