Aw, Lame! [Wii U]
I've been mostly ignoring all the talk of the Wii U up to this point. I didn't really get what was going on, and guess I have to admit that I've been pretty out of the gaming loop lately. I just looked up a lot of what's been unveiled about it so far.
Nintendo, I am disappoint.
Don't get me wrong. The idea of having a screen on each controller is pretty rad, actually. That's something I thought was a good idea since those games that used GBAs as GameCube controllers. PacMan Versus especially was pretty fun with that idea! I'm glad to see them exploring that further.
The things that bother me are really, first off, that this controller is apparently going to try to do it all. It's going to try to be a sensor bar, a tablet, a classic controller, a motion controller, ETC. It will inevitably not be well designed for any of the above tasks, because it's going to be too busy trying to be OK at all of them. On top of that, I can only assume these controllers are going to be astronomically expensive because of all the hardware included in each one. If I'm right about that, it's going to defeat the whole idea by making multiplayer too recklessly expensive for one person to fully equip a system.
The second is another controller issue, actually. They're supposed to also have a 'Pro' controller that's designed more like a classic controller. Oh good! What's it look like? I hope it has the innovative, unique, and natural-feeling design similar to Gamecube controllers with solid construction an- NOPE. It's a freaking xBox controller. Just with the classic buttons and d-pad positions swapped with the sticks. What are you, Wii U? A sassy teenager? "I don't follow your rules man! I'm gonna wear a black shirt and a white tie instead of the other way around. Don't tell me what to do!" C'mon, man! You used to be the Lady Gaga of system developers! But, hey, it's just a classic-wireless controller, so it should be relatively inexpensive at least, right? NoooOOPE. Fifty bucks. But it's totally worth it, because it's got 80 hours of battery life on a charge. Oh good. Because, you know, if I can't play a game for at least 50 hours straight without needing to put the controller in a cradle while I eat or sleep or poop or something, I can't even consider it a true gaming console. Or, y'know, you could have just put a wire on it. I hear those make a controller have pretty good battery life too. Just sayin'.
This is... It's just... Why... Nintendo. I want to like you. Really I do. The DS was brilliant, and I still argue that the Wii was the best console of this generation. Heck, I've admitted that I like features on the Wii U too. But, please, stop. Just stop and think for a second. You're getting out of control. Please just sit down and breathe and realize that you're like high school kids making a video. It's like you keep thinking of things that you think will make your idea cool, and trying to pile them all in until the core idea is completely obfuscated. And then adding sex appeal because you think no one will pay attention without it.
I think, if I get this console at all, it will be a long time before I do. I don't have the money, the time, or, most importantly, the want for this. I'm still pretty happy with my DS and my early Wii with Gamecube support.
EDIT: I've just been informed that the Wii U only has one of those big screen controllers per console and everyone else uses regular WiiMotes. Right. Guess I have to rescind the credit I gave the console, then, because really cool ideas like Pac-Man Versus are once again out the window.
Nintendo. Check minus minus. See me after class.

FA+

But honestly I'm inclined to agree... Honestly, you know what this is reminding me of right now? The GCN-GBA link cable. I mean, seriously. It's like the expectation/intent of local multiplayer is that each friend should bring their own controller over to sync up. Of course have they also changed things from earlier talk? I haven't been paying very close attention, but I thought I remembered Nintendo saying that the Wii-U only actually could support one or two of the big fancy controllers and everyone else would need to use a Wiimote... Maybe I'm crazy, or maybe that changed, I dunno.
Course I'm unhappy with controller prices nowadays in general.. It seems like for a fully functional wireless controller (For the Wii that would include the nunchuk) it's indeed a minimum of like, $50. And that's just -sad-. The only reason I even have 3 wiimotes is because of getting the special version o' Skyward Sword that had the golden Wiimote. Only have 2 nunchuks still, though. The joys of never really needing to worry about playing with other people locally, I guess.
When I think of that GCN-GBA connectability, I think of something that lets the three people have screens, so they can play stealthily while the one person has the big screen that everyone can see, so that it doesn't ruin the strategies of the three with the smaller screens (ala Pac-Man Versus.) Having the one person have the little screen basically obliterates that purpose. I mean, I can see uses for it, but that one's out the window. Which means a Mario Party for Wii U has that entire idea of mini-games for 1v3 just gone, for example.
I know, right?! Last time I had some friends from around the country visit, I went and bought a bunch of things so we could all play with my Wii. I also bought some controllers for a game console, and it just about broke the bank. ;_;
I like the concept of dabbling in every control scheme, and in some cases (Pikmin 3) a combination, like using the remotes but having the game pad propped up as a second screen. It gives people an insane amount of room to experiment with making some fun games.
Call me a gimmick whore, but I'm insanely excited for the Wii U, enough that I've already saved enough money for the system and all the accessories.
Also, rumor has it they bumped the limit to two game pads, and that if they plan to sell them separately you'll be looking at at least $150 a pop.
I guess we'll have to wait and see.
I was considering one of these when I first heard about it, but when I saw the controller even just that was a big turn-off.
I'll just have to look for another classic Wii again.
Also I miss you, need to talk more! :[ *Double tak-hugs*
*hugs back* Aye, we need to bump into each other more often.
... And thanks for that lovely note a while back. <3
I don't know anything else about the wii-u...hell..i barely know about the 3ds and how different IT is.
I really don't hate the xBox controllers. I don't love them, but I don't hate them either. They're just... standard. And I think the only reason their style got so popular is because they do feel relatively good for FPS games.
But all FPS games on the Wii should inevitably use the wii-mote to aim instead, because it's intrinsically more accurate, so it doesn't have that edge. And GameCube controllers are basically legendarily comfortable and intuitive for most games, where xBox controllers are just 'meh' for anything, really.
I guess what it comes down to is xBox controllers are okay, but Gamecube controllers are glorious, and it's a real shame to see them choosing the former over the latter just because it's become the norm.
Hopefully they'll have more compelling games in the future. And better controllers.
And Really I wasn't all that interested in the Wii U anyway.
Yaaaaaaay. ._.
Oh yeah. Sega hasn't made another console since.
I don't think this'll happen with Nintendo, because they have more than just one franchise to endlessly exploit, but still...
Sega actually wanted to be way ahead of its time in a bunch of ways. Did you know that there were plans to make their portable system, the Nomad, a touchscreen game console? But they realized that before following through that the technology was very expensive at the time, and would have made the console absurdly expensive as well.
Y'know who apparently hasn't realized this, given the Wii U's price and the price of its accessories? Nintendo. :|
DS dropped the gameboy.
PS3 dropped the PS2
Wii Dropped the Gamecube.
Come on, whats wrong with having the compatability!
Maybe I'm just getting old, or feel like all disks are easier to cross-code than they really are, but I just feel like GameCube was filtered out before its time.
Also I'm a bit of a fanboy.
So, right now, they need to first sell me on the console, then sell me on games for the console.
