Web Efficiency

Moo!
Has anyone else noticed the insanity lately with how heavy websites and web browsers are?
This is the biggest smack in the face of "web apps" Web applications are more often heavier and slower than non-web based variants. Of the pages I have open right now, google+ is eating 240mb of ram, twitter is eating half a gig, wikipedia (mostly text anyway) is eating only 50mb where as a google hangout is eating an entire gig. How is this even remotely reasonable let alone possible?
I've written websites, and programs... They don't take that much resource, I'm sorry.. a 40kb website (including images) shouldn't require 40mb to render, this my friends is pure fucking unreasonable.
Web programming is pretty and all, but why for the love of hell does it have to be so inefficient?!
