Gosh. It seems like they're updating programs every fifteen minutes these days. I've read at how the new Windows won't work on systems more than five years old as it's desined to be updated through phone aps, which is something I'm technically inefficent at, and without the equipment or skill to do so.

The Photoshop you gave me is working well for what I use it for, although there have been times where I wished I was a little bit more computer savvy. I wanted to add an "Olde English" or "German" looking font to the program while I was drawing the "Young Foxensteen" images, but couldn't figure out how to do it. For fear of ruining my computer I just had to settle for something close.

I'm also reluctant to add the "Patch" to my wi-fi chip program as I keep getting a warning that the virus blocker has detected problems in the download that could cause trouble later. Should I just load only the programs I get from the phone company's site, or find some way to use the anti-virus program to scan the download before I install it?

Finally, I recently discovered that there are advantages to working on a larger scale. Now I know you've found some way to scan and digitize those huge canvases and book covers you've gotten in the past. So what could be done to get a 36 X40" image scanned into the computer? The easiest way I could think of is to take a good picture of the image, then clean it up in photoshop.

I'm thinking about "Hesperia," Inside and outside. How soon do you need it?

To install a new font into Windows, it's simply a matter of finding a font you like, downloading it (if necessary) and right-clicking the font file (usually a .TTF) and selecting 'Install'. With regard to a Wi-Fi patch, whatever antivirus program you're using should scan the file automatically when you download it.

Well, the antivirus programs is scanning it and giving him a false positive on the installer. However, what he needs to do is find out who made the wifi chip (usually someone like RealTek or Intel) and download the updated drivers from there.

Yeah, that sounds about par for the course. I have a couple programs that don't work right anymore, either. Had to set up an XP virtual machine in order to run some engineering software for class.

There is a way to get Photoshop 7 to install on Windows 7, fortunately. Next time you get in touch with me I'll walk you through it. I've been able to do it a few times.

What about trying to get it run in compatibility mode as Windows XP? Right click - properties and click on the "compatibility" tab, checkmark "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and select Windows XP (Service Pack 3).

That would be the method, but there's another option you can check in case of a driver issue. Disabling the visual themes and composition can do that. Running the program as administrator is also recommended.

I was able to use Windows 2000 and Windows XP SP 1 settings successfully for this program.

My Mom runs AutoCAD 2006 on Windows 7. When you run it, Windows will give you the message that it has known compatibility issues with Windows 7, and gives you the option to ignore the message, so I did that. It runs perfectly fine. But yeah, there is that option, which I don't use (in fact I never use the compatibility options in Windows 7, since half the time they don't really work)

Had you tried running the program in compatibility mode?

Strange, didn't know that could happen with Photoshop. CS5 is possibly the best in my opinion, but...ya know...my opinion probably isn't yours. ;3
Anyhoo...one of my friends suggested XP is by far the best OS for Windows, and I don't doubt it, since I've used XP for a good six-ish years or so. But whatever...I'm rambling as usual. Sorry to hear about your techno-trifles. :(

Sorry to hear this it is a pain in the rear, and of course there is no incentive for the manufacturers to update their programs for new Operating systems and plenty for them to push people into upgrading.. Thjey also get the advantage of pushing off the blame off on Microsoft

Sorry to hear that, personally, I love Windows 7 (once I turned off some of the background junk it comes with). I am not a fan of Win8 on PCs (not one bit), but I could see it being a decent cross over into a future mouse-less OS once PCs regularly ship with large high-def touch screens.

Worst case scenario you can always get virtualbox for free and just virtualize a full XP install while getting all of the Windows 7 goodies... like 90% less spaghetti OS code. Then again I am already on Windows 8 and loving it.

Might an alternative to Photoshop work instead?
GIMP is just about as powerful, and just a little different... but it's open-source and totally free. No licenses or anything at all: just download and install it. There's a version compiled for Windows. Could definitely be worth your time to look into.

Another open-source solution, in regards to a word processor, is OpenOffice. It's capable of opening any Windows text file, as well as its own file formats... and it can natively export documents to PDF. It's a complete document suite too, totally able to do everything MS Office can do (and do it better, in many cases). Just like GIMP, it's totally free.

Tried GIMP once. It does things so differently from Photoshop that the learning curve was too steep for the time available. Might give it a try again sometime though.

Might have to look at Open Office and see if it does indeed do the job.

My computer fried its boot sector around Christmas last year, and the new installation refused to accept MS Office 2000. *rageface*

So I switched to OpenOffice.
Aside from more recognized file types, the PDF exporter, more colors for font and backgrounds, and double the spreadsheet size... it's basically identical to MS Office. If you know Microsoft's junk, you'll be able to dive right into OpenOffice without skipping a beat. I'll probably never bother with the MS Office suite again.

It does do a few advanced functions a little differently... but for simple word processing, it's functionally identical. Should be easy to find all the usual stuff on the menus and toolbars. You can ask me if you have any specific questions; I'd be happy to help.

Heh, I myself had the opposite problem--I started out with GIMP, then when I got PS through...alternate methods, it was too hard for me to figure out, and besides, I was already fairly adept at GIMP :P

You're definitely gonna need to consult the manual for some things (the settings for the grid is under a different pull-down than the button that turns the grid on/off? lolwut?), but given a decent amount of time, most of it can be intuit-ed.

Can't speak on Open Office though.

Oh, I know that feeling. I have this Vista box right now because my old copy of Photoshop 6 works fine on it, but doesn't work at all on 7.

Goldie, I have had the same problem at work.
I was forced to update to newer windows version, due to the newer securities, my Photoshop did not reload on the new platform... and I had the main geek fuss with it for 4 hours.. and he gave up.. I was told to buy the newest version of Photoshop...
