im guessing its a promotion to add new players for now. i believe it will be free to play in a few months or so?

I couldn't honestly tell you. They've been working hard with
champion and item balancing, the new game mode, still
fuddling with the store system and cosmetic items and
other (possibly) important things. I've noticed changes
now and again every once in awhile, so they're still
tinkering. My best opinion, they want those that have
played the game to get more new-comers exposed,
and get more feed-back, before going full-release.
Otherwise, I don't think they'd throw out multiple
$5 keys out just because they felt like being nice. :P
But yeah, I think they're getting ready, slowly,
to bring their game out of closed beta into full.

Guess I'll give it a try if you still have a copy
