I LIKE GAMES THAT INSPIRE ME TO WRITE OUT DIALOGUE. I ALSO LIKE GRAPHICS THAT INSPIRE ME TO WRITE OUT IMAGERY, WHICH IS PRETTY NEAT.
AND THEN I GET TO THINKING OF ACTUALLY DEVELOPING A STORY. GIVING IT A PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE. GIVING IT A SETTING. GIVING IT A purpose...

It's an odd technique that helps to make everything else seem much larger in scale. I like to think that I do the same with my own writing when you have powerfully prominent characters like Chanda, Gloria, and the angles, yet the story centers around four ordinary nephils (cat people).
Vaan couldn't be another "Squall leonhart" or another "Cloud Strife" or "Zidane Tribal." they took a large step back on centering matters around the "main" character in order to flesh out the rest of things much better.
Just look at FF8. Personally I think the rest of the story suffers because Squall and Rinoa are the main focus. Not so much in the case of FF10 though, since I believe Tidus and Yuna's "weaker" personalities complimented the "overbearing" presentation.
Vaan might as well be your anonymous Skyrim OC. He's no person of "godly mention," but I think that's a nice touch that helps to further draw the PLAYER into the game's world.
