I started a chapter with all characters who lack the ability to even put a dent in the boss, while this boss is able to kill one of my people in one hit. this is about 100 minutes in until I realized I have to start over.

Oh, I see. That's not really that good of a Fire Emblem... but I played a lot of it, haha. I'd say don't be afraid to sacrifice your units. They don't really have much of a personality (so you really won't miss anything if you lose some units), plus you actually get bonus chapters if you kill enough of your units off. Try focusing on raising a small amount of units, and don't be afraid to discard units if they don't look like they're growing well.

what's addicting is finding out how to get an NPC to join. but... I don't think I can lose any of them! it's too hard... I love them!

I'm kind of new at fire emblem in general. I played my first fire emblem, radiant dawn, a few years ago, but didn't pay much attention to it until earlier this year.

also isn't shadow dragon a remake of the original fire emblem? I don't know the storyline at all lol.

Mhmm, that's why it's all like, basic and stuff... like some characters only have one line of dialogue and that's it, haha.

If you don't lose any, you can't get some! It's a lose-lose situation, so you might as well make things easier for yourself.

I forgot to ask, what is this hidden mission? are there more? is that like, a normal fire emblem thing? you meet certain requirements, and it opens up more missions?

It's not in all the Fire Emblems, but most of them. There are a few side chapters in Shadow Dragon that you get if you've lost enough units. Since each one has a unit you can recruit, it was probably done this way to help out players who were struggling with the game.
