What is your motivation?
Time to talk about one of the new mechanics that I have been playing around with on Skydogs.
Many deck building games let you buy everything from some laid out store, or a refreshing roster which moves as play progresses. And yes while we have these elements to buy our cast of crewmates to draft into your Mighty Pirate ™ crew, and missions also pass by progressively to game play.
But we wanted to ask the basic question. What motivates a person to become a Sky pirate on Cathian? It is glory and fame? Wealth and worldly goods? Notoriety and Infamy? Or Calamity and Discord? We have taken these themes and made them into 4 different play style decks which serve as your rewards and means of becoming a legend and winning the game.
In Skydogs when you take on missions they will give you options to choose which kind of play style reward cards to take into your deck. Inside each of the decks hold 15 victory point (VP) cards randomly inserted which is required to win, along with cards that offer tactics based on each motivation.
Fame builds your reputation with friendly Non-Empire governments around Cathian. This clout offers defensive tactics and ship parts to defend your good name.
Fortune represents your worldly wealth. From having a fancy new ship to having a quick burning Illuma engine, you will be dashing around your fellow players and getting all the gold to buy only the best crew for your ship.
Infamy is your fearsome reputation towards villainy and cruel ambitions. This often means working for the Empire some times, but also means you have the latest secret tech and the biggest cannons to rip your opposition into shreds.
Calamity is your ability to bring misfortune onto others and be a harbinger to where ever your ship travels. The tactics here are often dirty underhanded tricks to steal cards and hinder players while they are trying to complete their missions.
While each play style is different, you don't have to build a deck just off one strategy. Since VP is spread equally between all decks there is just as good of chance of getting your winning cards from two completely different decks.
This build also allows for us to expand more with further motivation decks and themes such as Liberty, Glory, and Duty, mixed in with Anarchy, Revenge, and Control. For different play styles and more VP to be either added in or swapped out with the base game.
And lets us expand more with a more pirates from Caithan, including themes like: Asian , Middle eastern, Savages (Pulp Style Dinos and Mythic Creatures), and Ghosts (And many more curses) And if we are more daring even including a full add on for the Empire expansion to make the threat all more real as players now face crews of Illuma powered auto-matrons lead by cold, deadly, killer, Captains.
Hope this helps give people more of an idea of what we are doing here. Wish us luck after we get the kickstarter up!
