This is definitely not the case, in fact, no leaves exist on the trees at all. Did I move and get transplanted in Mississippi? No, there are still corn fields, not cotton/tobacco around.

Maybe it's like in the Langoliers. Everything is used up; that's why the sky is gray, but there are people walking on the street so this IS the present.
