These days, such stories are shocking because society has become less and less raw than it used to be. It isn't anything new, its the fact you've grown up in a country where things are usually not as grim as they would be outside it.

Justice depends on who defines it. Personally, putting someone in jail where they just sit for a time after doing what they do is a pretty stupid idea. How does that fix anything? It doesn't. If the crime and punishment system wasn't afraid to show some balls, then people like this would be less willing to go through with what they do.
