Firewood rant
is it hard to do something nice for someone else? i dont think so. i have a friend whos doesnt have a lot of money they cant run the heater much and they have to use there fire wood sparingly so i thought i might be nice and usefull to give them our x-mas tree to burn. to keep warm. my dad low a behold the flips out at my idea say there isnt anything on this tree to burn. granted its a small tree there isnt much to it. but it can be used to help start a fire or something. honestly if i could i would have just bought them as much fire wood as they wanted.

To burn well wood has to be dried. When I buy logs I try to buy them at least a year before I need them to give them time to dry out properly otherwise they burn slowly and don't throw out any heat at all.
The best wood to scavenge for fire wood is broken pallets or old building timbers and the like. Stuff that's nice and dry and can be easily cut into thick logs although after spending 2 years burning nothing but wood I've found that coal burns way longer and makes less mess and it doesn't need to be fed so often and costs about the same to keep a fire in for the day.
My sister actually wrapped up a box of coal and a box of logs as my Christmas present for me :) I must have been really naughty this year but at least it's useful and it won't make me fat.
