It was once argued that merely running a computer program is committing piracy, because the software is being duplicated in RAM, and is thus a direct violation of most software EULAs.

The simple truth is that we are all felons. We just don't have any idea of which laws we've broken, because the laws are too numerous and too stupid.

A company named Myriad Genetics filed for patents on the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, mutations of which are linked to breast and ovarian cancer. The company charged a lot of money for women to test if they had these gene mutations and are thus a high cancer risk. People and the ACLU complained, and in 2010 the patents were overturned in court. The company filed for appeal, however, and the patents were restored, under the argument that genes isolated under laboratory conditions ("gene fragments") were not "naturally occurring" and thus could be patented. So, simply by splitting up DNA into smaller pieces, that apparently qualifies as an invention.

In other words, the appeals panel ruled that "a method" of gene isolation is not required to obtain a patent, as the mere isolation itself qualifies as a patentable invention, and thus the genes themselves can be patented. A method or execution is no longer needed to claim a patent, effectively overturning the whole point of the patent system. That's bad.

very well said and put, and yes I have read most of it after posting this, but i still did not get the point, however with this simple shorter version of yours worth reading, it makes it a lot easier and comprehensible. One can only read to a point. That would be like trying to read the 200 chapter book with 500 pages each chapter in 1 hour in comparison. I believe they did that on purpose, which is pretty damn smart in my opinion, cheeky cheeky bastards. Dont get me wrong, I LOVE to read but stuff like this in so many words that can be explained and done simple as you have put it just doesn't work to well for me before i begin to lose interest in the data. Kinda like they taught me in oral comm I suppose. Again, I thank you for dulling this down for me. I could barely understand it.

Hopefully whomever holds that patent is rich, that way everyone who suffers from Alzheimer's can sue them for damages.
