Desktops, Laptops, Mobiles~

General
Me and a friend were talking at work a short while ago about computers ( as we often do), namely our own -- at one point I was considering getting a laptop, and as a result he asked, "Do you regret buying a desktop at all?" And my answer was, most certainly, definitely not. ;3 But it led me to think, of all the people I know, who uses what, and why~? In addition, I have two (RL) friends who're Mac-only, while the rest of us are Windows-users~ Each has their own unique pros-and-cons, so I'm interested in hearing what others have to say. :3
So! Here's the deal.
Answer these questions in this order and tell me what you think :3
1)a) Do you primarily use a Desktop, Laptop/Tablet PC, or a mobile-PC device?
1)b) Do you prefer it that way -- if so, why? If not, then what would you rather have, and why?
1)c) [Optional] What would your dream unit be?
2)a) Do you primarily use Windows, Mac-OS, Linux or any other obscure OS?
2)b) Do you prefer it that way -- if so, why? If not, then what would you rather have, and why?
So, now I shall proceed to provide my own answers. ;3
1)a) I use a big ol' clunky Desktop PC for all my computing needs~
1)b) I've used all three styles throughout my time, and I can definitely say I'll always be a Desktop man. While it is possible for Laptops to get some crazy-ass specs equivalent to Desktops, the price-for-power ratio is way less on a Desktop. To get a laptop as good as my Desktop would have cost at least twice as much, if not more. Desktops also have the largest support for add-ons and hardware changes, as well as for the most expansion potential of peripherals~ (Additional monitors, high-quality sound output, a thousand USB ports and what have you.) But of course, that only leads into the reason I like them most -- with a Desktop and it's many parts unpacked and mounted into place, it's like a 'home base' -- it's dug in, an immobile monster who's claimed wherever it rests as it's home. ;3 Sit down at it, and you're just 'in the zone'. It's the place where everything happens. It's the cockpit of the vehicle, the head of the state -- the ever-expandable core. ;3 When you sit down, you're home. <3 I can't move it, but hell, when I'm here, there's nowhere else I'd rather be. ;3
2)a) I'm a Windows-user, XP-Professional (I've no desire to move on to Vista.)
2)b) Not to say anything bad about Mac-OS -- Macs are superb computers and so is their OS. Simple to use, looks damn fine, reliable, support for tons of things -- but it seems Mac-OS is more for intellectual and IT-industry use. It's strengths definitely do not like in the Gaming sector, as well as a lot of the weird obscure little programs I use are Windows-only. I know you can emulate Windows programs on Mac pretty seamlessly now, but I have truly just been a Windows guy all my life~ I feel no need to change now. If I ever had an insane windfall, I'd probably buy a Mac too, but right now there's really no reason to change. <3
So, tell me about it, guys. ;3

FA+

b. I perfer it because I play a lot of PC games and you need a desktop for that in my opinion~. I had a laptop before my current desktop and it was underpowered and then it broke becuase my cat knocked it off a table. :I
c. I'd like to upgrade. x3
2. a. Windows, XP. I'll switch to vista when I upgrade probably, but I don't see the point until I get a Direct X 10 card.
b. Don't like macs, don't care about linux~. Games are best on Windows.
Blah~
1)b) In the end it's better for me 'cause I occasionally have to drag this thing around on campuses and it never hurts to be able to use it in lecture halls to take notes, though professors are starting to ban them due to people messing around. Good for projects, as well.
1)c) A much more powerful laptop that I can transport and would be able to play modernized games. One of my friends has one but I don't think it's within my price range.
2)a) Windows.
2)b) Yes. Because screw Linux and Mac OSX is UNIX!
b. Yes. It lets me have a powerful machine with parts tailored to my liking.
c. My dream machine would be my current one with a better processor (top of the line quad core) and more powerful GPUs. Perhaps I'd get a larger monitor, but I like my 24" LCD.
2. a. Windows. I don't use Mac or Linux.
b. As long as I can play my games I'm fine, everything else is just for convenience. Macs are nice and all (for non gamers), but because I'm a gamer, Windows is the way to go. I'm not a fan of Linux...
1.
a) I've used both a Desktop and a Notebook primarily, for the past couple of years it's been my Notebook tho.
b) Well my actual lappy is one of those decently large ones so it's not as underpowered (well.. wasnt at that time).. and I must say I really like it much much more than my Desktop. The ability to make anywhere in your home that happy place to waste your time is very, very nice.. sure I have to move to my big ol' PC if i want to play something that requires a bit more of power.. but I'm not that big of a hardcore gamer so no big deal.
c) Dream unit? Not really sure.. I'd love one of those powerful Notebooks that can run anything, but they're a tad too large and way way waaaaay too costly. On the other side, I'd not mind one of the small-yet-verygood laps that are just as costly.
2.
a) Windows XP
b) Not sure, I'm used to windows but it has its problems, I tried a couple of the Linux versions and I can tell you that if you've got the patience to learn how to use them they're probably much more comfortable and nicer all-around than windows.. Mac OS havent tried.
Laptops and Desktops are different, so its all about what you'd want next, a lap would probably be almost as or not-as powerful as your current comp but you'd be able to take it with you; if you're not into that or dont need it, then there's no point to change. Right?
1b) Currently, I do not have a laptop at all. I have used them plenty and have done lots on others, but nothing will replace me having a big, powerful desktop beast. The only reason for a laptop for me is mobility, which I don't really need, but would be a little nicer.
1c) Dream machine would be a ultra high-end desktop (pretty close as-is, but there is always room to go up) with a mobile satellite mirror. The mirror would merely be a screen and keyboard, incredible battery life, screen, and wireless internet. The laptop has very very little power, however simply is running the desktop PC as a remote terminal directly. I find it useless to spend insane cash on something that will inherently be underpowered.
2a) I use Windows Vista x64 business edition
2b) I do not like macs. The OS is great, works much smoother on simple things, comes pre-configured and easier to set up out of the box, but I could NEVER have one. Apple is far too arrogant with their marketing, they do a bunch of things I simply do not like, and they target casual users, not catering to a powerhouse user. While I could switch, it would be too big of a pain to have to re-learn how to wrestle control away from the defaults and make it actually do what I want it to.
preferences really depends on the person and intended use. I do lots of video transcoding, working with large large images, archiving and editing music, playing games, editing levels, and much more. These are just too CPU-intensive and require every ounce of power to keep from being sluggish. A laptop would be crippled if I tried to use it like my desktop, as even that I leave running overnight for rendering. I would not ever want to do that with a laptop, that just seems wrong to me.
Yes, I like Mac and their products, but it's their attitude that makes me hate them. x3
They are using something similar with the PSP/PS3 with remote play, same concept.
1)b) No. It's not because I don't like the desktop PC, but I just hate spending my free time at the college without internet x3
1)c) for now.. just wanna buy any decent laptop
2)a) Windows ^^
2)b) Well, I have nothing against the others, but damn, windows is in my daddy's PC since I was born xD
I'm simply not used to any diferent xD
1)b) I love it that way because I can go into the kitchen, cook something, and watch some AVGN or something while doing so. x3
1)c) SOMETHING THAT DOES NOT RESET AUTOMATICALLY.
2)a) Windows.
2)b) It's just what I've used throughout most of my life. I've used macs before too, and they are nice, but they don't really do what I use a computer primarily for. If I got some better recording software and stuff, then maybe I'd one day consider a mac.
Get that laptop fixed that I gave you if it's cheap btw, then you will have a laptop. ;o ....Well, I guess I've got to get back home cause I have it with me, bah. x3;
1)b) You'd think I'd be at a loss for sheer gaming power, but I managed to get a laptop with 4GB RAM, a pretty kickass video card and CPU (dual core of course), and a near 5-hour battery life. All for about $1600. So in all, I'm happy with my decision to go portable. I love being able to move around the house (be in my bedroom!), or take my computer to friends' houses. I can take it outside as well, and get inspiration for graphics drawings and such.
1)c) The ultimate gaming laptop powerhouse with the newest upgrades and longest battery life. Plus, the ability to continue easy upgrades when newer technology becomes available.
2)a) Vista....
2)b) Well, Vista has been pissing me off lately.. it was fine for the first few months, but there was a driver issue or something and I had to perform Factory Image Restore. I've grown up with Windows, so I can't truly speak with an open mind, but I think if Macs were more compatible with the universe, I'd move over to the simplistic, media-oriented OS in a heartbeat. Oh, and you can't upgrade Mac hardware from what I heard.
1)a) Desktop. I've put a lot of money into this chunk of metal and I play games a lot. I have a tablet PC too, which I primarily use when I'm at my girlfriend's place or on the road. When I start studying next fall I intend to use it at school too.
1)b) I do. It would be nice if my laptop could handle some newer games too, but I know I can't have everything. :P
1)c) Something powerful, silent and wireless. I think we should be able to have everything, all the way to the AC power, transmitted wirelessly in at least couple of decades.
2)a) Both my desktop and tablet run 64bit Windows Vista Ultimate.
2)b) I guess I could give a shot at Mac, but I don't think I would really start using it that much. x3
Apparently, Philips (lol) has a patent on a device that uses Radio waves to move a bunch of tiny stuff inside a battery, recharging it automatically, all the time, forever -- an idea they intend on putting into phones and stuff. An amazing idea, to say the least -- radio waves would be able to charge all sorts of wireless devices. I imagine that if this were to pick up and become mainstream, that they'd make it so you could buy a hub or a special unit in your house that you hook up to the wall, and it would project radio waves that all the devices in your house would be rigged to pick up -- TVs, Computers, Toaster -- everything hooked up with a special battery/charging unit to make use of this unique feature -- no cords at all, just hang your TV on the wall and go. ;3 Or maybe, municipalities could have a giant one that would cover the whole town and offer power on a macro-scale~ Of course, I'm just speculating, I have no idea how much power it's capable of generating (as with most things, the more energy you need, an exponential amount of input is required).
I don't know, it's a fun idea to ponder though l3~
However, I don't like the idea of high energy waves and beams being constantly blasted about so I can charge stuff. I don't want a radioactive brain tumor to avoid charging a phone.
Another two things I have high hopes for are fuel cells and nanotube batteries. :3
