I like that! I may never be a good artist, but reading things like that helps me learn more about how to look at art.

It's used a lot in movies actually.. try to pay attention to where the put characters on the screen and how it changes.

While I think you'd better have a good reason for centering the character, I agree. It can be a very powerful tool!

I just have a beef with wrong "art rules", like the one telling people to always put stuff in the golden mean because omg dynamic. Flash comprehension is not for every picture. You can do whatever you want in art, it just does different things. And having so many pictures out there be golden mean compositions, unfortunate. Happens a lot in photography.

But centring the character makes him the boss of things, so that is useful too.

Yup. I still think you can compose a figure nicely with respect to the format... I do love composing sitting figures and giving them some flow across the page.
But idk unless a person is standing super straight they can't all be dead centre :o
Just some thoughts after all those single nude figure studies. My teacher happened to be composition obsessed but he'd never demand things put off centre, he'd just make sure the model posed dynamically on her own.

How long would you say your scenery pieces take you? Do you find them more difficult than your character pieces?

5-10 hours at the moment, but I develop a lot because school.
And yes, because I have so much more experience with characters - that's honestly what it boils down to. School forces us to do environments a lot because they know we are more character focused on our own.
