No matter how hard I tried at that job, I just could not wrap my head around it. I tried, I just wasn't any good. I'm good at a lot of things, but that one... not so much.

The lie is that if you put in enough hours of practice you can learn to do anything. The truths is 1) life has more to offer than endless hours of struggle to be medeoker at something you don't like and 2) some things you or I will just never be any good at. The bitch is finding that combination of something you are good at, you like , and some one else will pay you to do. ... Still looking for that one myself.

WHat was the job?

I use to draw up blueprints for different architectual structures. Mostly different types of cell phone and radio towers.

Yes, I would agree that the job sounds like it requires a certain baseline of qualifications. Sometimes you have it, sometimes you don't!

But consider this: You got the job in the first place. You at least had enough competency to pass the interview and get the job. That means you have a high starting point; just aim a little lower.

That actually sounds like a pretty awesome job, but having taken hand drafting twice and currently mastering CAD, I can understand how it would be something hard to understand, particularly if you don't have a physics/engineering backround.

...most of my friends either work sales, service or in medical device manufacturing, of those service is easiest and sales is better but not great.

I don't have a background at all in it. The training for what they wanted me to do was nonexistant... they didnt train me at all. They just said... here is the specs, and notes of the thing we want you to draw, get to it.

They have specific formats they wanted me to draw to... but never really told me.

Some of the stuff I drew they would say.. "we need more specifics on each piece..." Or others I would put a great amount of detail and they would laugh and say.. "oh for this report we don't need that much detail..."

The notes they would give me a lot of the time would be incomplete, or VERY badly written so they were illegible... It was very frustrating...

They threw me in.. sink or swim.. and I sunk. I know a fuck ton about CAD now, and I can draw almost anything. I think the biggest thing that held me back was the office environment I was in... it was so very distracting. I almost wish I could have drawn at home, I would have been able to produce better.

before college, I worked under-the-table as a janitor at an auto repair shop, mostly I cleaned things up, but I was also asked to do such things as:

*drive a forklift around the shop with my boss standing on a pallet 20 feet in the air (hey, I said it was a bad idea, he still did it. also my first and only time ever driving a forklift)
*rewire a 440v industrial air compressor for single phase 220v with nothing but a .pdf and a pair of wire strippers.
*strip a porche 911 cup car that had been wrecked. the lack of training showed when one of the struts exploded and the spring went flying across the shop.

it's pathetic that employers do this kind of shit, but hey, it's a seller's market on jobs, and it probably will be as long as we're alive because the previous generation fucked us.

That sucks :< Sorry to hear, but least your not to hung up on it :) If your interested, check out a place called Express Professionals; it's a temp agency that hooked me up with a really nice job fully-time and permanent. Worth looking into if you dont have a target in mind for a future job already :)
