I don't get it...

So I was at work today, and this is a place I've worked at for almost 2 years now. I'm a nice guy, no bs, and I always like to throw out a complement here and there to make someones day, or just because I like the piece of clothing/jewlery they are wearing. Anyway, so I go to help this one employee out, who's trying to take the customers order, and as I walk away, I complement the girl on her earings (they where spiral, and I like spirals x3). The guy, apperantly the husband, pulled me asside and told me it was the rudest and most unprofesional thing he's ever seen someone do while they where trying to have a nice time and get food... I told him that in 2 years of working there, he is the first to get angry over one of my complements...
I just wanted to rant about this and see what other people thought, and maybe what else I shoulda done... I kept myself from apologizing to the woman for complementing her, but thought it may start something x3

In all seriousness, the male in this situation over reacted but sometimes guys feel threatened as they are very possessive of their girlfriends/wives. If your boss mentions it to you, offer to apologize and try to just smile in the future and not vocalize your thoughts to customers, good or bad.
