Regretting and Remembering

Well somebody better be dying... That's what I said, 10 years ago today. I was a freshman in highschool. It was movie night at my parents house, a night of some acclaim. It meant pizza, and soda with dinner, it only came once a month, as we sat in front of the tube. I don't even remember what the movie was, but it was just starting, when the phone rang, and my older sister, never one to resist the siren call of that infernal device, picked it up, which meant we had to pause the movie. No big deal, but it ticked me off that she was delaying my pleasure time to chat endlessly with her latest beau, so I shouted "damn it somebody better be dying!" I glared at my sister and watched her go white as a sheet, with a trembling voice she said "Mom, it's for you." My mother hurriedly picked up the phone, and listened for a few seconds before bursting into tears... My father than took the phone to determine what had happened, my mother's best friends 8 year old son, an epileptic, had the stomach flu, and while sleeping, had thrown up his medication, and had a very bad seizure... And died 2 hours after that call. I know full we'll his mother heard me yell what I said, I couldn't look her in the eye at the funeral, and haven't really since. But my foolish, and insensitive words, as well as the choked sob that his mother had when they closed the coffin, still haunt me to this day. Watch your words folks, they can reach far beyond thier intent.
